Has anyone tried this attenuator which uses the very expensive Shinkoh tants? I'm looking for a compact, good quality, drop-in replacement for an Alps Blue pot.

    Cheers

Looks nice, but why not convert your Alps to a shunt.

Find out what resistance pot you have, lets assume 100k log. Then buy a pair of the best resistors you can afford/want to buy of the nearest/same value, lets say 97K. That becomes Rx and the Alps Ry.

    Hi LiloLee,
THanks, That's an elegant solution, which must sound great, but it won't solve the problem of inprecise channel balance, the bugbear of pots.

its worth a go though just to try it out - I've done this in one of my integrated amps and built a passive pre using this method. Both sound really good (both using alps blue pots). I'm about to do it inside an amp I've picked up for a mate...

What kind of % imbalance are you talking about?

A voltage divider is calculated Vout = Vin*R2/(R1+R2)

You'll find that is you are talking about 5%, this will come out at 2.5% at max volume and will decrease exponentially and become insignificant in the usual listening range.

But if you want to spend £££ then go for it or how about a Goldpoint or DACT
