    Hi,

Subject says it all really - my AR8bx's bass driver's foam surrounds have
rotted. I need to know the cheapest way to get replacements or get the
existing ones refoamed. I've been quoted £100 (appr $190) by Wembley
loudspeakers including shipping both ways but want a cheaper alternative.
In fact, any opinions on whether it's worth it or would I be better off
buying new speakers for £100 from Richer? Use is for home hifi in small
    dining room.

    Any help appreciated

    Thanks

  2. Replacement surrounds are readily available, at least in the US. If you
don't feel like doing it yourself, you should be able to find someone to do
it for much less than the cost of replacement drivers.

    ** I recently restored a pair of AR8bxs.

    It was quite easy.

First, I replaced the two woofers with some nice Philippino ones.

Then I replaced the two tweeters with some nice Chinese ones.

    Sounded great.

    Just like my father's axe.

    Get it ???

** Quote some previous text - you stinking ASSHOLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ** CRAPOLOGY !!!!!!!!!!!!

There is no AR company to supply new drivers.

Similar Asian drivers of better quality are cheap as chips.

I think AR in the US can probably get you new drivers for less than that,
but the postage may well kill you.

I suggest trying to do the surround replacement yourself. Get a generic
kit from Parts Express or whatever the UK equivalent is. You'll screw it
up the first couple times, if my experience is any judge, but you'll get
the hang of it. This isn't the most critical application so if the damping
is a little different, it won't be the end of the world. And it's a useful
    skill to learn.

Call AR and ask. For the out-of-production drivers they are selling
modern equivalents if they don't have any old stock. Many of the equivalents
are very close, while some (like the AR-4X tweeters) are a little sloppy.
The AR guys are at +1 617-821-2300 or in the US, 800-225-0847.

** Means cheap Asian crap you can buy anywhere.

    ** To cheap Asian crap.

** There is no AR company - it went bang years ago.

The brand name is owned by Audiovox who use it for all manner of shite.

That 800-225-0847 number gets you the Baton Rouge phone directory.

But 800-225-9847 gets you AB Tech Services:

17C Airport Dr., Hopedale, MA 01747 USA

  10. You're about the wittiest person I've ever met. Did you study with Dorothy
    Parker? Or Oscar Levant?

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What makes you think I'm bothered by your remarks? I'm not. And I see no
point in quoting previous text when the context is perfectly obvious even to
those who, in Lee Falk fashion, came in late.

I didn't say new AR drivers. I said replacement drivers.

Perhaps. But what if the owner wants the original sound?
