As some of you guys may be aware, my Teac VRDS T1 has recently been in for repair due to skipping on the first three or four tracks of some CDs.

After a repair (new laser) and return to the shop because it was just as bad as before the repair and then a new motor (due to possible motor spindle wear) I was invited to hear the stunning results of these two repairs at the HiFi shop place thingy.

Result?..... Still shagged!!! The funny thing is it was only my CDs that skipped. Test ones used in the shop after the first repair played fine. The engineer that fixed the machine mentioned that the CD I left as the worst skipper (Gladiator soundtrack) looked a bit worn and dirty on very close inspection.

Now, Darren at Loud and Clear in Glasgow suggested giving the CD a clean. He took it upstairs gave it a spin on the Discdoctor CD cleaning gadget thingy, brought if back down stairs and hey presto no more skipping. Another aparently spotless CD I brought along was all over the place. Again after cleaning, no more skipping.

Anyway, I took the Teac home, bunged in a few CDs and listened to the glorious sound of more skipping on many of my CDs. Luckily Darren had talked me into buying a CD cleaning gadget (only £10) and after a quick spin no more skipping on 99% of CDs after cleaning.

But the funy thing is thay all played fine on my crappy £80 Reoc DVD player when the Teac wouldn't even get past 10 secs. Weird!

It seems that in general the Teac Transport is very sensitive to any kind of dirt, grime, anything, even stuff whick looks invisible to the human eye. Well, at least I've got a new laser and motor which should extend the life of my transport.

Has anyone else had these kind of problems with CD players and CDs they may have owned for a while and never cleaned?

My VRDS-7 died a death with the same issue. Trying to get replacement parts from TEAC was simply impossible.
Can't say it makes me want to buy another TEAC unit.

I can understand your feelings, but this is one of the dangers of buying older (out of production) CDPs. It doesn't just affect TEAC either (although the problem may be more accute as TEAC presumably has much smaller production runs than say Phillips or Sony).
This looks like it is going to become an even bigger problem for many of us as pretty much all the manufactirers are phasing out or going to phase out production of CD-only units in favour of universal drives.
TEACS have a reputation for being picky. Mine hasn't been up to now, but plenty of other owners have remarked upon this. Perhpas it has something to do with the way the VRDS system works?
Strangely, TTs of almost any vintage seem repairable one way or another.

I own 3pcs Coland CD player, 288 was manufactured mid 1995, 2pcs 277 were manufactured Autumn 1996. All units are equipped with legendary TEAC VRDS1 mechanism and control board from TEAC. 2 out of 3 were produced the sympthoms of skipping only at the first 1-2-3 tracks. The laser is aligned and I deliberately did not change anything with the laser adjustment/setting. Since the outer part of the CD is OK, the laser must be functioning. Then I bought special lubricants because I xpected, that the lubrication is bad at the beginning of the lens/rail. Only special lubricants are allowed (Molykote - white colour). I dismountled all 3 players and I greased all Copland players underneat the CD laser rai and guide metal rod. At all 3 CD players the skipping symthoms remained, And I had heard some hissles from the spinning motor when it played wrong. Then I got the suspicion that the skipping is originated from resonance of the spinning motor. (at the beginning it rotates faster). Because I ave 3 VRD1 mechanism, I had the oportuniti to swap the spinning motor only. So I removed the whole spinner bridge from Copland 277 (the good one) and replaced with the skipping Copland 288 CD player.
    THE SKIPPING HAS GONE !!!
Therefore I can state with 100% confidence, the 1-2-3 track skipping originates from spinning motor resonance.
Anybody knows where can I buy VRDS1 spinning mechanism from?
