judging by the adverts it's faster than a tortoise and scares small children (or tries to run them over causing them to fall off their trikes)
is it me or is advertising in general loosing the plot?
    cheers

I think the 1-series has lost the plot :chunder:

    Awful looking car IMO.

    Unlike this: :D

I have just seen the 1 series and it doesnt look that good (not seen the ad though). It reminds me of an old nissan almera!

What do people think about the new 3 series?

    http://www.autocar.co.uk/popups/gallery.asp?NA=209379

    Hideous?

Actually it seems to have been slightly de-bangle-ised so it is not as ugly as I was fearing. still not pretty though.

I think the new A class looks miles better than the 1 series.

That new A class looks like a cross between a citroen C2 and a new mitsu colt (which isn't entirely unrelated in fact, and is 80% the same as the smart forfour, also from mercedes).

If someone forced me to have a small hatch, I'd have a 1 series.

and "you should have gone to Specsavers" :D

BTW, I lurve the new 3 series, but I am seeking therapy :D

I like the front half of the 1 series, but not so keen on the rest, especially the tailgate or the C pillers. Overall still more striking than the A class, not beautiful by any means but striking nonetheless.

What scares me is that I agree with Julian (about the advert) :yikes:

I like the new 3 series a lot...but then I like the new 5 and new 7 aswell :) . Judging by the comments in Autocar and other mags, most people are finally admitting that Bangle was right afterall and that his cars are "clicking into place".

Looking forward to seeing the new 1-series in the flesh where it apparently looks a lot better allthough I think it looks pretty good anyway.

Robbo - the new A class looks horrid. As Paul said, it's an MPV :chunder: .

I've rather liked the bangle designs from the start. Yes, they're challenging, but they're new. Put the NEW Audi A6 next to the 5 series, and it's the A6 that looks dated. Same with the A8 and 7 series, despite both BMWs being on sale longer. Same goes for the Z4 and new SLK, 1 Series and golf/147/etc, and so on.

James May's review of the BMW 5 was right. "It takes a bit of getting used to, but the good stuff always does".

bmw's styling remains madder than a fish for me but some like it so whatever. to be honest i don't actually like the styling of many cars at present. even traditional supercar makers such as ferrari, lamborghini and maserati are making weird looking cars that polarise opinion. nicest looking car at the moment imho is the aston db9
    [IMG]
and even that isn't a patch on classic astons.
as for small / medium sized family cars? whichever costs me least to run and can hold everything it needs to would be best. styling of all of the current crop is pretty samey in a 1 box kind of way.
    cheers

Jules, do you not reckon that DB9 almost bears a passing resemblance to that BMW 6-series I pictured above.

The 6-series is one of the nicest BMW's there has ever been, IMO. I saw one in the flesh the other day, and pictures dont do it justice to how mean and aggressive it looks on the road.

The DB9 is an awesome looking car. It's a good update of the superb DB7. It's a shame though that all the aston models (Vanquish, DB9, AMV8) look the same as one another. It's a winning formula I guess, but it could become too familiar.

I don't see much resemblance between the DB9 and the 6 series personally.

At least BMW are daring to do something different. Audi, Merc, Jag, etc are all too staid in comparison.

Paul, I recently drove a 645 and the as well as looking good (a bit like the 911 from the side), it was a very nice drive.

    I WANT ONE!!!!!!!

As I'm never likely to be able to afford to buy it, can we start a collection for me please? You know it's for a good cause (my health) and I'll let you look at it sometimes. ;)

Perhaps a 330 would be the most practical.

    OTOH a 911...

Not keen on the new look BMWs personally.

    Astons are classics.

I quite like the new Alfa 156 :
