The cost of windows (not the microsoft kind!)

I need a new window for my bedroom and my parents say they can't afford to pay for all of it. Basicaly its wrotten and the sash fell out early this evening and nearly killed my sister.

Its a big window about 1.5m high and 1 metre long. Does anybody have a very rough idea how much PVC or wooden will cost with cheap thin glass and fitted? I used to have a mate who fitted some windows for me £100 but I have lost contact.

Hum, well I suspect sash windows are very expensive, do you have to have like for like replacement (probably stupid question cos it would look odd having two differently designed windows).
When I got the windows and doors done at our place which was 11 windows, 2 door and patio door cost £5.5k. I reckon your looking at about £200 - £250 seeing as its sash type.

If ya folks are really that hard up, why not try a reclimation yard, if you have one near you, they take things out of old, demoloshed houses, might be able to pick up a 2nd hand one.

£200-£300 should be fine, I just didn't want to have to pay £1000 just a window. £300 sounds about right if as far as I remember its a good 6-7 hours work to fit, but I have been told PVC ones are easier to fit than wooden ones which my mate used to fit. I better start getting some quotes otherwise my sash will be bored up with plastic clear perspex for the winter. The current window is this design:

Its just one of them times at the moment were everything is breaking my parents have had to buy a new washing machine, a new dish washer and top of this they are going to have to pay nearly £500 to get this done my dads escort.

Four new tryes
Full service
New cam belt and guides
Some slight rust repairs on the rare wheel arch
Central locking repair
And a new mid section exhaust.

When I get a car I will get a banger then I don't need to worry about any of the above stuff other than the exhaust and tryes. When you have a £300 car who cars if your cam belt snaps? When its a £2000 its a different matter. I must be tired as I am woffeling again and go way of topic... sorry

IMHO.. A traditional sash box window will cost more than £200-300 including fitting..

I had a wood window put in a couple of years ago. It's very big.. 4m long by 1.5m high, but it's not a sash window..which would be much more complicated to make..and that's where the cost is. I found a joiner to build the window for me.. and the untreated wood window came to around £875 in softwood, (hardwood cil) in the end I went hardwood throughout because it was only £1,200. As hardwood is about twice the cost of softwood.. you can see that most of the cost was labour..(the labour was the same for both woods).. at around £550. Excluding the cost of the scafolding that was needed, the window ended up costing me £2,400 and I had to paint it myself. Your window is about a quater of the size.. about as complicated to make I would say, (I had openers, cross hatched uppers and a curved bit of wood in mine).. so I think you're looking at about £500 total in softwood.

Of course I live in N. London so I'm likely to be paying London prices.. even though I went out of my way to find a cheap, (but good quality), Joiner.

Traditional sash will require the work of a carpenter and will cost more than 200 by a long margin.

It dosn't really matter what the window is made out of, as long as it has an open which I think is the sash right? A PVC one will be fine. Basicaly I am after the cheapest type of window with an opening.

The cheapest way

Mr Amazingtrade.

The cheapest way to buy and fit a window is.

Measure your window size. You will be ok to within half an inch.

Go to your local builders merchant and tell them you want to buy a ready made window. The chances are it will be a stock size. If not they will order one.

Next go to your pub and ask around for someone who can fit a window. It will take no more than 3 hours to remove old window and fit new. If you are prepared to act as the assistant, you will get it fitted for £50 as long as you pay cash.

My son approached a fitter he saw doing some one elses house and he had a front door fitted for £50.00.

Yeah thats what I used to do with Mark, but he used to make them out of scrap wood too, it was very cheap, I just helped him out.
