I have got one of these comming on demo.

I currently run a Naim CD3, Rega Mira amp and Rega Jura speakers. I also have a P2 which doesn't get a huge amount of use. cables are Chord I/C's and krystal cables power and speakers. I also have a Rega Ear with some of Bottlenecks old Beyers (they are great Chris, cheers mate.)

The Mira and Jura combo does suffer a certain loose wooliness in the bass department. The speakers have been cured with some clever bungs and decent room positioning. The amp (I have found by trying other more exotic stuff that i can't afford) is the remaining weak link in the bass department.

I would like more soundstage, tighter bass and to retain the musicality that rega seems to deliver quite nicely.

Any thoughts / observations and better still first hand experience is very much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance ZG fellas.

    James.

I heard one of these once, on the end of an Audionet Art V2 CD player and some ProAc D15 speakers, very nice it was too.

You shouldn't have a problem with flabby bass. From my memory, it produced nice tight low frequencies, although there was a slight shortfall in ultimate extension. It's real strength for me was the midrange, which just sounded more "real" than a lot of amps I've heard. It should be a good match for the rest of your system, esp. the Naim CD player.

Correct me if I'm wrong someone, but if I remember correctly GundamSD had one of these not so long ago.

Out of interest, what were the more expensive options you tried but couldn't afford?

theres a guy on pink fish that swears by them wigwam. try doing a 'unico' search on pink fish. He has put up loads of posts on them.

When I heard one ( a long time ago) it struck me as giving a very good sound for the money. I dont know how it would work in your setup though.

Sorry penance, I should have added a :D to that last line.
Sorry if that post came accross a bit strong, it really was meant in jest.

And re: the John Hunt comment, I did feel that was a bit strong. If you were interested in an amp would it not be a good idea to ask around about it. There has been plenty of talk about it on my site. Just wanted to get the views of other like minded people. Most people on forums love to let people know what they think about certain bits of kit.

Mods. If there is a problem with me posting here please let me know. I haven't hidden who I am and we already have a lot of members in common, I spend my life on the other site and it is quite nice to pop over here from time to time for a change of scenery and to get a broader set of opinions.

The trouble with forums is that the smile on ones face while typing is rarely seen by readers unless you add the correct :D ;) etc.

    No problems mate.

suggest wagwig has a word with him self and is a little less sensitive.

good luck with what ever it was you are auditioning. i have to say that i bought all my kit without a single audition. I read a few reviews and assumed that if it's 3x the price of its repalcement then the chances are it'll be ok.

It's not comming for audition any more, the chaps Dad came round for coffee and when the Chap mentioned he was selling it Dad decided to buy it, there and then. :(

Fair play to the chap, i would have done the same. But given all the positive feedback on these amps I am starting to think I might take a punt. Un heard.

If I can find one S/H of course.

    Cheers,
    James.

    James,

I have been out of contact for a few days and have only just seen your post. The Unico is a delightful amp that will astound you with its wonderful sonics. I had grown tired of the glassy sheen I was experiencing with my Naim 72/APX2/140 and wanted something that still had timing and drive but could also provide air, sweetness and above all reality.

After many months of listening I eventually heard the Unico and it blew away anything else up to £1500. It has everything I was looking for and at a bargain basement price. However, I eventually asked to hear the Unico SE (140W per channel and an inbuilt phono stage) and was hooked. It must be the bargain of the century.

I am sure you will not be disappointed. It does take some time to fully break in but even out of the box it will surprice you. The mid band is delicate, the bass taut and full and the highs have no gloss or sheen. Instruments and voices sound so real and tactile, you will rediscover your music collection.

I have had mine for 3 months now and it just keeps getting better. Let us know how you get on when it arrives.

    Happy listening,

    ft
