    1985

    Thorens TD 160

    Pioneer SA230?

    Wharfdale 507.

Father hated Rock music so bought a house to put it all in. This was/is the most expensive/effective upgrade to date :D

    Pioneer PL 12D record deck
    Pioneer SX450 receiver
    Celestion Ditton 15 speakers

1976. I still have the receipt but not the boxes. Cascaded all but beloved Dittons to daughter's bedroom to gain WAF, and justify upgrade in 1991. Dittons finally retired from main system in 2000 (fully justifying the £110 spent on them in 1976), and from the second system in 2004. SX450 still doing duty in daughter's flat.

Got my first 'real hifi' about 3 years ago, also replacing a Pioneer Stack system that i'd had since 1988 (and always hated)
Philips CD 723, Rotel RA-01 and B&W 601 S3 – vast improvement, but all since replaced

Hmmm, well there was a Connoiseur BD1 turntable, an ILP amp (DIY case) and KEF/Peerless speakers (DIY cabinets) but the less said the better. I think the first real hifi was:

    1977

    Thorens TD160BC mkII / SME 3009 / Ortofon VMS20E

Crimson Elektrik Pre and CE608 Power (in DIY cases)

KEF B200 / Peerless DT10HFC (in DIY cabinets)

First system was a crazy party one: Cerwin-Vega! speakers x4, each with 10" drivers, driven via Yamaha cd & amp. I remember reading through all the speaker specs in the back of what hifi mag in the early nineties, searching for the highest sensitivity and power handling, lol. :JPS:

Next step was many small scale proper hifi's. It's taken me 12 years to exceed the first systems impact, whilst combining it with real-fi.

Hi Paul - another one, doh!

    Hi-end sound at a mid-fi price :)

It was a worthy successor to my Alpha 9. I'm very pleased with it. Even smoother in the treble than the 9 was (and the 9 was one of the best), slightly more hifi than the 9 - bigger stage, better imaging, but still very tuneful and very detailed.

My first "hifi" shopping experience was buying a stereo with my mum in 1976 (I was 13).. We bought a B&O Beocenter 3500, which is still going!
My first hifi (which I spent my entire 1st term's student grant on) was an Akai direct drive TT, with Technics SU-V5 amp (loved those flashing lights) and Kef Carina 2 speakers..
I thought it was the best hifi in the world, until I heard an LP12 through Radford amps'n'stuff into Tannoy Gold 15" a week or so later.. Perhaps it was the DBX range expander that did it!

Systemdeck IIX t/t AT1120 arm (I think), Ortofon cart of some description, Creek 4040 amp, Boston A40 speakers.

Can't for the life of me remember exactly what it all replaced though, the systemdeck maybe a technics deck and the Bostons some hand-me-down AR speakers. No idea what the Creek superceded.

Never though I'd end up with the kind of sound I have now though!

my sentiments exactly! My first 'upgrade' was to replace the PL12 with a Systemdek - and discovered so much more was hidden in the grooves of that vinyl.

I still have the Systemdek - and the vinyl - but have postponed that slippery slope until I have tweaked my digital-based system for what its worth. (Now I come to think of it, I might put the Systemdedek into the SonicT/Soundex set-up in the spare bedroom ... will need a phonobox tho' ...)
