Hi,
It has to be said there is never been a better time to buy music. A large amount of old music is now available for sale. Many different artists and styles are once again back on sale.
Record collecting seemed to start to take off in the late 60s and early 70s. As newer styles were coming into play, demand for older tunes still remained.
Examples of this was in the early 70s when a number of 60s Motown tunes found chart success due to popular demand.
Scenes like the Northern Soul and Rock 'n' Roll keep up the demand for old tunes that were popular yesteryear or stuff that was rare and unknown.
Throughout popular music, a large number of labels came and went. Some got quite big but hit problems then disappeared. Some just got bought up by other labels and their back catalogues just forgotten. There were also labels which only a few people know about.
One label with a fine catalogue is Ace Records. This was a business that started life on a market stall in London during the mid 70s. Ted Caroll, who ran the stall, was a big music fan. He like post war black American music and Rock n Roll. He first started with the Chiswick label which release a number of pub rock, new wve and punk stuff in the 70s. From early on the reissued old tunes. This lead to more old stuff being released.
Ted along with Roger Armstrong and Trevor Churchill started to form an outllet for these reissues, Ace Records.
Ace records takes it's name from the US label of the same name. They used the name to reissue many items. Having the UK rights for the Ace label meant they had their hands on some tasty stuff. This in turn lead to getting the rights for the Modern label, which had a number of big R&B, blues hitters record on the label.
As the success of the grew, more dealwere struck to release material from many fine label such as Specialty, Stax, Cadence, Laurie, Kent, Fantasy and loads more. Trips were made to hunt down the original mastertapes and delve into record companies stock rooms to find rare and unreleased stuff. Also to find more old labels.
Ace records has a big back catalogue which contains music by well known to unknown artists such as Little Richard, James Carr, BB King, The Cramps, Fats Domino, Otis Redding, The Zombies, Ike Turner, The Count Bishops, The Damned, Davey Graham, John Fahey, Funkadelic, Joan Baez, 3 Mustaphas 3, Millie Jackson and loads loads more.
Ace records release item under many different labels depending on style and artists. These include ACE, Big Beat, Kent, Bopcity, Westbound, Chiswick and Globestyle.
The music goes from Rock n Roll to soul to funk to 50s pop to R&B to world music to Jazz to Do wop to foljk to blues to Northern Soul to deep soul to punk to 60s pop and loads more.
