Active Preamps vs. TVCs again

sure, a friend (solaja audio) measured S&B, promitheus and his own stuff, even a malaysian promi measured better (although sounded slightly worse than S&B imho).

The transformers in the Glasshouse are described as 'bespoke' - any clues as to their origin? Anyone measured them? I have no major criticisms of them in use with music, just curious given the relative pricing of the Music First vs. Glsshouse vs. Promi!

Measured better in what ways? I really couldn't care less about the ultra-sonic ringing since my CDs only go up to 20KHz.

as far as my memory serves the ringing between the 3 TVCs i mentioned was something like 30k vs 40k vs nearly 70k. and the third one sounded really different, a better drive and more body to acoustic instruments, probably it has to do with double C-cores and substantial size in comparison with 102s

simon there are theories that early ringing, though in ultrasonic range, easily affect what you hear. don't know much about this.

haven't seen glasshouse myself but judging from the pics the TXs look very similar to promi's. there's no big science behind making a TVC - except for QC - i believe you can find an OEM manufacturer in far east in no time...

sorry you have to translate that for the non-native english spicies here....:)

Just a bit of light relief from the pressing issues of the day: global warming, the credit crunch and TVC ringing at higher frequencies.

Actually, your English is bloody good ! How come? Have you lived here before?

Edit: I was just pissing about with your use of wounding instead of winding.

I seem to have a Doppelgänger! David, I don't recall you looking much like me :p Also, you seem to be dead. "Baudrillard, 1929 - 2007".

A poor excuse :grrr: And what of you being dead, how do you explain that?

"A corpse is a corpse, of course of course
And no one likes being a corpse of course
That is, of course, unless the corpse has been saved by Dr. Death

Go right to the courts and tell those dorks
Morality means it is wrong to force
More suffering on an aspiring corpse
Talk to Dr. Death

People yakkity yak and scoff; a snap for them to say
But Dr. Death won't bump you off unless you're dead meat anyway"

maybe it was a freudian slip, who knows....

i've never lived in the UK but i did a bit of traveling when i was younger and the pound of sterling a bit weaker (latest fluctuations aside). however being a reader of NME in the late 70s and 80s, it was enough to catch a bit more. so i'm a real victim of barney hoskins, biba kopf, matthew collin, charlie gillett, simon reynolds and andy gill;)

Ha, nice one! I'll remember that when its time for the big bump off.
Actually, I am currently listening to Love- Forever Changes right now, so a bit related in terms of 'the other side'.

Baudrillard was a French philosopher who died last year. Controversial for different reasons but very interesting:

Hey Anu, I can relate to that. Reading NME around that time too. Used to listen to John Peel back then when New Wave was in its prime. Yikes showing my age now (born '64).

exactly. living in belgrade, tuning to the BBC on the AM wavelenghts every saturday afternoon for a portion of the fall, buzzcocks and martha & the muffins at john peel's. then buying NME next monday at the only kiosk in town selling foreign press.

i'm born '64 too;)

This thread is exuding friendliness - now come on now, this isn't the Zero Gain way - let's mention. . . . . . cables!!!!!!!!!!

Tenson has very kindly created a nice new avatar for me, which I'm now using :MILD:.

I think he was a bit concerned that my knowledgeable posts (full of expertise and technical know how) might be confused for his. But why would he mind that

Anyway, I really enjoyed being Tenson for 12 hours and will sorely miss using it. Adios Tenson:
