In london yesterday (Sunday 25th July 2010), I stumbled across a small art exhibition on the south bank.

A paper sign in the window ''for the love of vinyl''

Inside, one Storm Thorgerson. A guy sitting behind a little white table, and album covers all over the walls.

I hadn't heard of Storm (as I approach my late 30's it's apparent the amount I know is overshadowed by the amount I do not..)

but one or two of you may be familiar with the following images -

This chap, yup, you guessed it - he did those.

many, many more, just like them.

    :O

    I couldnt believe it, wow..

How many times have I held up album covers like houses of the holy, or floyd's 'wish you were here' (another one of his) and looked into the images as my record span around and around?

I would say, as an artist generating images that are familiar to us all -

is there anyone who can lay greater claim to accessing our mass consciousness?

What artist in the last hundred years has made images that can be recognised..instantly... from millions of people all over the globe?

Not just that, but the .. integration of image and music is so important in creating the whole.

I can't even THINK of my favourite albums of all time without picturing the cover, and getting an emotional reaction.

In the end, I spent money I didn't have, and bought a signed limited edition print, a cover from a powder finger album. It looks awesome, and I can't wait til it's on the wall. I will take a photo and put it up here.

Storm was a gent, and a real character. What a pleasure to meet the guy behind all of this. Wonder if he knows, really knows the impact he has had on people ?

    So,
what album cover means the most to you?
What creates the most feeling for you just by it's image?
A new and unusual thread I think, interested to see the images that move the people of PFM.

    Over to you...,

    Hi Chris,

I've been aware of this man for a very long time. He has done alot of work over the years.

I too like lp art. I love looking at LP sleeves, having spent big chucks of my life rummaging through record racks and boxes.

Storn's work is based around his ideas and how they translate to photo. Most of his work is done with camera, some are not easy to do. The surreal element to them makes them stand out and sticks in the mind.

It is interesting that he is not an artists by trade but happen to be in the right at the right time.

Here is a good piece about his work.

His website is worth a look.

    Hi Dean

I had an amazing time, and truly a very memorable time talking to Storm - for example about how he made the massive metal heads for the division bell, and where they are now.

I bought his book when I was there, which I've just started but is glorious... the best type of coffee table book, full of glossy pictures and interesting facts.

Incidentally and completely off topic I just found out a little bit about 'the fifth beatle' billy preston' - I'd completely missed this artist.. watched a few video's on you tube.. he is a legend on the hammond organ, and what a soulful voice!

I KNOW you will know all about him - is this a good collection of his music? -

Back on the topic of the main thread, what album covers mean the most to you?

Led zep 3 is another good one with the inner spinning wheel, just don't use it to skin up on though, bits tend to get trapped between the layers

    Hi Chris,

The late Billy Preston is well worth a listen. He was a child prodigy on the keyboards, playing from a very early age. I remember Channel 4 showing the US Nat King Cole shows from the 1956. On it was a 10 year old Billy Preston playing solo and a duet with Nat. Billy played with the likes of Little Richard, ray Charles and also the Beatles.

That cd is a very good one to get.

I like a lot of covers. I will dig some out.

According to rolling stone magazine (ever a magazine to like publishing lists)

here are the top 99 album covers -

    http://rateyourmusic.com/list/fedderedder/rolling_stones_100_greatest_album_covers

    number one

    number two

but I do, very much have an 'issue' with number three....

In case the above jpeg was difficult to see, that's because there's nothing there.... the beatles 'white' album.

How can that be in the top ten album covers of all time? It's just plain white. Hey I love my stark minimilism, and love the white album, but one of the greatest album covers of all time?... and number 3??!

That list seems to be heavily influenced by the actual music with Beatles and Stones stuff at the top - more a 'best album' of all time thing. Not that I agree with most it, especially Sgt Peppers which always comes at No.1:eek:
