so , how do you know if it needs aligned or not ?
and how exactly do you do such a thing?

To test alignment, tune to a station that only has one frequency which you know. When you get the strongest signal is the tuner on the correct frequency?

To align is difficult if you don't have a frequency generator and a schematic. Are you a member of the yahoo Leak group? http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hjleak they'd give you some advice.

There's rather more to it than Lilolee suggests. Aligning a tuner is actually about 'peaking' - tuning the response - of the front end and intermediate stages to get the best balance of selectivity, sensitivity and low distortion in teh audio output. YOu need a good scope (>100Mhz), and an FM sig gen. You can't do it by ear, so if it works at all, don't meddle - you won't improve things. Aligning a valve tuner is exactly the same as a SS unit BTW, and getting the needle to appear in the right place is just about moving teh pointer along the string inside ;)

Tuners out of alignment are insensitive, or provide weak or distorted audio output. Note if it's your Troughline you're looking to improve they are reputedly pretty insensitive and need a good strong radio signal (ie a good aerial - feeding it the TV downlead isn;t really good enough) to get the best out of them. If in doubt over its state of tune, try a better aerial first.

Edit: Alignment instructions for Troughlines are here: http://home.mira.net/~kiewavly/TLalign.html

I'm a member of that group and I don't recall any questions re Troughlines in recent weeks. Are you sure they are getting through, as the guys there are very friendly. What were your questions anyway?

Mmm, that last one (16022) flew past me ie didn't understand it, and I own a Torughline. Might have been the same for the others who haven't tried 2 different stereo decoders in the same tuner. I would say just unlucky in the lack of response. Maybe try again! Good luck.
