Now Gone
From virtually every reply to this type of question has been to avoid Norton as it's a resource hogger and not all that brilliant. Avast and AVG are the best freebies. Another "must have" freebie is Ccleaner (crapcleaner, just in case you thought i'd virtually stuttered). Best wishes Ian
Hi Guys Thank you for your replies. I have the Avg 8 but its due to expire soon, so its pay for it at that time. What is the benefits and pit falls of the likes of Avira, Avast and on another sites suggestion of Comodo. I know very little about all of this so a bit more info would be welcome. Thank you in advance D Louth 77 Hi Smeago, I take it your a Mac ? I was given this PC and as money is tight at present I can't complain to much about it. Macs are pretty and their design is good but lots of people don't like Apple. I for one do hold a grudge in regard to the I POD. I know I am old fashioned but give me physical media every time at full band width.
I'm lucky as I've had a mac for years just get a lot of banter from the I.T. guys I know! I'm not into compressed media either, still can't get my vinyl disc to fit in my ipod!
Ah yes, Macs are virus proof aren't they? http://www.sophos.com/blogs/gc/g/2008/12/02/do-you-really-need-anti-virus-on-your-apple-mac/ Back to the topic. Go for Avast.
Oh crap it appears they are watching me as well... "Wearing a dark polo-neck sweater and drinking cappuccino does not make you any less susceptible to social engineering tricks than Windows users."
DLouth77 What on earth does I have the Avg 8 but its due to expire soon mean? I've used AVG free download for years and it never expired. It might have needed updating occasionally.
Avg 8 Hi Bob When I was given this Pc it had An old version of AVG on it. I updated on Avg website and got the free trial version. It now says that it is due to run out and I have to buy it to use it for longer. This was of AVG's site so its legit. I don't know a lot about PC's so please forgive my(stupidity), ignorance of this world. It really is a foreign land to me. Maybe they have lots of products some free and some you must pay for(which seems reasonable). The trial version I opted for was the full works version(firewall etc, not just the anti-virus). But that version to requires payment after 1 month. I have heard people talking about AVG being free or there being a free version if so I must have missed it, as it was not obvious. Regards D Louth 77
No, it's not obvious. - Go to http://free.avg.com/ - click Get It Now in the left hand box (Free Basic Protection) - Scroll down half way down the next page and click the leftmost of the three Download buttons (in the AVG Free column) - Click Download AVG Free 8.0 - Click Download Now I did that on a Mac, so it could be different on a PC but hopefully not. That will give you the virus software for free, but not the pointless ancillary functionality like firewalls and spam filters.
Firewalls are not pointless ancillaries! If you haven't got one go to http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-gb/zonealarm-pc-security-free-firewall.htm and download a free version of Zonealarm. I would also download CCleaner from www.ccleaner.com and use it regularly.
AVG and zonealarm here too. Never had any problems. I've noticed avg tries very hard to get you to download the pay for versions too. The updates also seem to hang for quite a while after downloading. Anyone else find this?
AVAST, anty virus, if not the best i think it is, my friends both as it's in walt disney and tesco use it so do i , nando
Thought that might get a bite Each to their own. Yes - I use AV and find the updates take longer than I would expect. Still, happy to sacrifice a couple of minutes given that it's free. I'd also add my recommendation to ccleaner - great bit of freeware.
