I am a proud owner of the Arcam Alpha 5 plus amp.

My immediate problem is that I have blown the right hand side output of the amp...whether I choose to listen to Speaker set 1, Speaker set 2(switched), or the earphones I only get an output from the left hand side of the amp. I have checked and confirmed that it is not my speakers that are the problem, it is the amp.

I have just received a quote from an arcam dealer for 85 uk pounds for parts, labour and VAT to fix......... I was wondering if I could source the parts and do this myself?? I am a structural engineer, but don't mind having a go at fixing it myself. Any comments regarding me sourcing the part myself and how I would go about replacing the part?

    Many thanks

If I were you I would source a Arcam Alpha 6 plus amp, which has then benefit of remote control volume and then sell the 5 for spares or repair.

    Just my two pence worth.

    ok..so I have an update

I emailed in parallel an arcam dealer and arcam's own spare parts division.
the arcam dealer, based on my description of my problem ,quoted me 85 quid parts labour and vat to fix. They had not seen the amp, they just quoted on my email description.

I copied the same email to arcam. they responded with "its probably the inline fuse that has blown...and you can buy a fuse from any electrical store."

as you can imagine, I liked the sound of arcam's own fault resolution...so I opened up my amplifier to have a look inside...could you believe it..sitting right in the middle of the circuit board is a clear label....."spare fuse"......so I swapped it with the right hand side fuse (since I had no right hand side sound) and low and behold I have fixed it...I now have my amp working perfectly again. :)

My message is this...if you are brave enough to have a first go at trying to resolve a problem yourself, with a little specialist help from the manufacturer, you can end up with a good result and saving yourself money and still ending up with the musical equipment you so dearly love.
I thank you all on this forum for looking at my problem, its much appreciated.

and PS...my next mod to this amp is to make it useable in the USA. Again, reviewing the labels on the circuit board inside the amp it appears I need to change a fuse by the kettle lead input....I ofcouse will get advice from arcam direct, but I do hope it is that simple!
