Streamer/server (after installing a HDD) in one. How "not expensive" is it?

I just did that. Seems worth exploring, even with the additional cost of the HDD.

Also look at the Western Digital there fantastic I set one up that I had purchased for a friends 50th and it handles Flac and 1080p plus many others. Ebuyer stock them and I would recommend the Samsung Metal enclosed external drive at 1.5TB.
This drive is super quiet and has an on / off knob which also doubles to dim the flashing drive access light.
    Hope this helps

There are those that make a big fuss about the price of legacy HiFi, then get very choosy about their computer hardware and software.

I don't care - so long as I get the bits to the DAC unmangled.

It's a Windows 7 Laptop and a Squeezebox at the moment, but I ain't proud.

I have this combination as well, feeding into a Meridian DAC and it sounds good to me. Just the lousy UI that I don't like.

    Look at this interface

    http://www.rusticrhino.com/drlovegrove/

you might, or might not think it better.

iPeng on the iPhone is nice enough, and are some equivalent apps for other smartphones.

I don't mind the web interface - but I am happy with Foobar as it comes!

    There's this box

    http://www.netgear.com/ptv

which just copies the video and audio output wirelessly to a TV.

Its £60. It has HDMI but no S/PDIF and it only work with Windows boxs using a particular Intel chipset.

Sorry Brian, I meant the UI on the Squeezebox. My music server is in another room. No issues with UI on PCs, I'm happy with iTunes or Rhythmbox (ubuntu).

That's what I took you to mean. Soem don't like the Squeezeserve interface, and it could be more exciting, but does the jpb.

The programme I offered is an alternative interface for Squeezeserve . but whether it is an improvement . . .

I wish someone would write a routine to make Songbird a front end for Squeezeserve.

Being the owner of a 'legacy' TV, these outputs caught my eye:

    Composite Video
    Composite Audio L/R
    Component Video

I seem to think that they will play nice with SCART - which would be good.
