.... has anyone tried SiMOn's products or something similar?

And a question to the man himself, is it possible to perhaps paint the surface or have an image printed on it?

Hi MO,

We have only just got everything in place to start trading so the only people who have tried them in their own rooms so far are John Jeffries from Sounds of Music, who has the Confidence bass panels in his main demo room and also in his home system and Rob Holt who just got some prototype midrange traps which are not planned to be released yet and a single wall panel (another prototype I needed to move on to clear space).

You may paint, or have painted, a picture on the front of the Ambience wall panels as long as the paint is not one that will clog the gaps in the fabric thus stopping the sound getting through, so basically ink or a water paints. I have not really followed this up urgently as for any wall panels to work fully they would need to be placed centred around tweeter or ear height on the wall which is really not where people usually hang pictures, thus it looks completely odd. This is the same for any diffusor or absorber, not just mine.

My aim with the styling was to have them made of very nice, high quality materials but also not have any stand-out visual features so as not to grab ones attention as a centre piece in the room. I found the wood frame with white front went well in nearly every room I looked at so choose that as the standard finish. Other woods and colours for the fronts will be available as well but everything is hand built so it would take a little longer to get the order through.

When JJ gets back from holiday in a couple of weeks we will sit down and discuss our final agreement for distribution through Metropolis Music and the products should soon start appearing in other dealers.

Tenson,

Any plans to get into the diffuser market? I assume if you were to copy some of RPG's designs, they'd sue you (if they found out!!)

Andy, the Ambience is a diffusor. It uses quadratic residue type diffusers with some of my own techniques to get them a lot slimmer while still working to a reasonably low frequency. It also has an element of absorption which helps to just calm some of the more lively rooms down a tad and also helps a little bit with diffusion too.

AudioSmile and RPG are really aimed at different markets, AudioSmile is aimed directly at high-end Hi-Fi market where the size and looks are a large factor but sound quality is also not compromised. RPG is aimed at the pro market where the size and looks are not an issue really. Unfortunately it is not possible to reduce the surface area of these type of products without reducing the effect the have (how much of the rooms surface area is changed relates directly to how much the sound is changed and the size of the good listening spot) but we have managed to get both the Confidence and the Ambience to be pretty damn slim-line without negatively effecting quality.

If anyone wants to enquire about the products please feel free to email me, I'm not sure how 'correct' it is to be discussing my own products online. The email address can be found on the website.

Whoops, hadn't look at the new website before I'd asked.

Judging by the thickness of the Ambience, I'd estimate it's effective bandwidth to be approx. 500Hz to 2700Hz. Am I in the right ballpark?

Thats about right, the actual diffusor is thinner than the whole panel because it has a back to it and the fabric front but like I said there are a few tricks employed to keep it working to a decent low frequency still, more like 600Hz.

The higher limit is about 3500Hz but the absorption will continue above that still.

Don't think anyone would mind. I'm pushing the whole diffuser agenda as it's about time people started to consider treatments other than just absorption.

Well the absorption kicks in around 1KHz and obviously carries on upwards (the wavelengths only get smaller!). The absorption is used in varied thicknesses and spaced evenly over the panel. The material is Basotect which is very effective. I experimented with the amount used by listening to it and tweaking.

Yes I think that is a big problem to overcome. A lot of people will have heard treated rooms with lots of foam about the place and get the wrong impression of what can be achieved with diffusers (or a mixture) instead.

In my own room I have a completely absorptive back wall as I am very close to it but for the rest of the room I use diffusors and I found they made a large difference to the detail and imaging especially but kept the room natural sounding still.
