From what I know, both of Wispelwey's recordings are on baroque cello, but now I begin to doubt.
Did he record a third cycle just recently? I know he mentioned he wanted to do this, some years ago in an interview.
I think I only have one recording with 'modern' cello (Gendron, not bad either).
In general, I tend to prefer baroque string instruments, because of their velvety sound and deeper warmth, probably caused by the gut strings. I remember, about ten years ago maybe, a guy tuned my piano and we talked about music and 'authenticity' and so on (he liked jazz, and thus .... also mr. Bach

). He also preferred baroque string instruments in Bach, but found it hard to explain why. So he asked me. I said something like
it's also not that easy for me to explain, but authentic strings instruments sound more like silk. He was very pleased with that answer and then asked
and what about the modern ones? Mmm, that was a difficult question. I think I answered
like warmed-up steel. Not very imaginitive, but yes, I still feel that way about the main differences. Exceptions excepted of course.
