Batman The Dark Knight

i went to see it last night, and im afraid i was unimpressed. Ledgers peformance was superb, but this film felt like a mish mash of four or five plot lines struggling to occupy the same space within the movie.

At least three points it felt like it was the end, and they continued on for yet another 20-30 minutes. I just started to get annoyed. Also bales stupid batman voice is just laughable.

The mood wasnt right, the plot wasnt right, its not one i'll be watching again. I didnt enjoy the last one much either. As far as im concerned theres no beating keaton in the first two

I enjoyed it and thought it was very good despite being a bit long.

However right near the start, the disappearing pencil trick and I already thought - this is not a 12!!

It's a 12A. This means that 12 and over can watch it unaccompanied and under 12s can watch it if accompanied by an adult. Utter madness, the film is way too violent for this certificate!

i thought in of itself it was near to perfect. ledger presented a Joker that was truly dark and disturbing, and disturbed, rather than the made for kids circus clown of previous films.

You gotta remember this is Dark Knight stuff, not boggo Batman for kids.

I loved the pencil trick, that set the stage.

I saw this movie and I just loved it. The character of joker (played bye Heath Ledger) was fantastic.

Now, it's one of my favorite movies. I believe that it's definitely the movie of the year

I agree - I just think it got the wrong classification. As it happens, there were no young kids (that I saw) at the screening I was at. I guess if you are a parent it is tough as on the one hand, you may suspect this is really not suitable, but on the other if you have a kid desperatly wanting to see it, and their friends have been, and the classification says they can ..... pester power plus the rating makes it tough to say no.

However, since I don't have kids - as an adult, I would recommend it. Well worth a watch & will be one I watch again when it comes to smaller screen.

Hi samantha

When i was a kid my parents would not let me watch certain movies on tv such as the original version of village of the damned ,i remember being very cross with them but when i finally saw it i could see why they didn't want me to watch it . The dark sadistic violence in The Dark Knight is (even though its mostly of screen)just to much for this certificate its at least a 15 .

The problem i guess is that when the likes of alan moore and frank miller reinvented Batman they were making a colourful/camp kiddies hero/character into a more serious adult charcter i.e much darker. The 70's tv series is IMHO is awful and is more comedy than anything else(one of the reasons i didn't read Bat Man when i got into comics) until Frank Miller wrote The Dark Knight and relaunched Bat Man quite a number of years ago(Miller had worked on Dare Devil and Electra and i liked what he had done with these Marvel Titles) so i checked out the first mini series he did for DC i.e the Dark Knight .

The joker in the early comics and the TV series compared to the Nicholson/Ledger interpretation was in deed a joke but i think Nicholsons Joker has the edge for me as there is more purpose to what he is doing and the balance of madness is better handled. Ledgers Joker is a stark raving lunatic and" because it makes you stranger "is no reason for what he does. The Joker would never burn billions of dollars. From what i hear Ledger based his Joker on Alan Moores version in a graphic novel(which i haven't read) and its harder to get more disturbed and dark than what Moore can write .

The recent Kids cartoon(i do watch animations) is set in the future and for a young kids tv show was very dark and violent,to dark for the aimed audience IMHO.

In Japan(un-like the West) a lot of this stuff is aimed at adults and there is a very distinct difference in the kids market there un-like here where comics and super hero stuff is thought as being for children only which in many cases it isn't and the modern Bat Man is not IMO for Children but young adults and older.

So shame on the clasification board for giving it a 12 a ( what adult in there right mind would allow a 12 year old to watch this)
I for one if i had children would not.

Regards D Louth

Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson all the way for me :)

A proper movie that balanced dark with comic book action, and IMHO a cooler looking batman suit.

Hi shrink

I agree about the suit and the car and the other gadgets but this movie is only about 6 months into Bat Mans career so the look will improve as time goes by. I agree , i thought that Keaton did a very good job in the first movie ( I was worried about Bale but hes quite good and i don't mind the voice )but the second not so good. The men in Penguinn suits was a hark back to the 70's crap tv show ,pity as Cat woman was really cool i love the bit when she back flips over to Bat Man and Penquinn and lands on her feet and purrs and the building behind blows up ,fabulous.

I still think Dark Knight is good but for me Bat Man Begins is better for the reasons i listed above .

regards D Louth

i know what you mean about the second film, but take away the penguin suits, it was a superbly dark, twisted and evil film with some disturbing undertones. Well executed. I watched it the other day, and enjoyed it end to end.

Something i cannot say of any modern batman movie. For all the strengths of begins, it still flagged in a few areas where boredom sets in slightly.

but hey... at least its not george clooney in a batman suit

I went to see it the other night; it was very good but not as good as 'Begins' IMHO. That was fresh and new; I loved the development of, well, pretty much everything relevant to the whole Batman story really from the new car to his combat training.

I do think it should probably have been a 15 cert really, also slightly confused at some people in the audience (not everyone but some) laughing at scenes that were intended to be very serious…but that's just strange people I guess! The Joker in a nurses outfit was genius though

Totally agree that it had some pacing issues though, I even found myself looking at my watch at times which is never a good sign.

As D Louth said though Batman is in his infancy so things will develop, having said that I didn't think there would be a better Batmobile than Keaton's but I've grown to like this one, something about it's shear mass and huge speed (a bit like an early Bentley) that's very cool, but yes, it still has a way to go to beat Keatons bat suit and car for me….

Yep D Louth - seems we agree :)

RDD - may be worth just editing your post (re 2 face) as prior to your contribution, I don't believe there have been any spoilers in this thread. I agree on the hospital scene though - classic stuff :D

I think the film-makers (and Ledger) really got to the core of what the Joker is all about in this film - certainly more so than the Nicholson effort (plus that screwed about with established canon too much - the Joker/Jack Napier did not kill Bruce's Parents).

The bit where the Joker reveals why he and Batman will never kill each other, and in point of fact NEED each other in order to carry on their existence rings true, especially if you read The Killing Joke and Arkham Asylum (which Ledger apparently read in order to understand the character better).

It's always nice to see actors/directors doing their homework before attempting their vision of an established franchise, and I believe Chris Nolan has got it spot on so far....

Awww, Muuuuuummm ;) Fair point edited....

I am yet to see this one. I have actually made I my mind to watch it come what. I also want to verify the authenticity and hype surrounding it.

Its a very good film, maybe could have done with a little trim here and there.

The only real complaint is the soundmix, when things get a bit dramatic becomes totally unintelligable. Some of Gary Oldmans scenes are obliterated as you can hardly hear what he is saying.

I've not seen the film, but I saw the bike in the flesh at the NEC bike show on 28 Nov. It appealed greatly to my inner 13 year old - until I found out it was powered by a Honda 450 CRF engine
