Why does Lucinda Williams mention Baton Rouge in so many of her songs?

I believe it was also the place the me parted company with Bobby Magee too, according to Janice Joplin.

I looked it up on Goggle and it just seems like so many other cities.

I wonder what the magic of the place is?

Its because she took a bus to Baton Rouge once and it was quite a traumatic experience which has been indelibly impressed upon her.

It is also a metaphor for a phallus - the red baton. So she took a bus to the red baton.

Hope that helps

Thanks for that, i had not considered the symbolism of the "baton rouge" it adds a new slant to the intrigue. Now where did I put my Lucinda Williams CDs, I must have another listen, especially to "Essence"

I should have added a smilie to my reply.....its not meant to be taken too seriously :)

I think she is actually from that city though. Or from Louisiana at any rate. And its probably the closest thing to civilisation if you are from Louisiana......its like being from Bognor and being wowed by London!

Actualy it turns out that Williams was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana. By the way I have her Essence album and I think it is awesome. Probably her best work although I havn't had serious listens of her more recent albums

Thanks for the interest. Essence is one of my favourite albums too. My all time favourite Lucinda Williams albums is her first album "Ramblin'" - I'd like to here her return to more simplistic acoustic style to allow her story telling songs to shine.

I actually did hear some Mary Gauthier on Pandora too. As you probably know, when you create a "radio" using a singer or band's name on Pandora, it will play that performer's music plus a lot of "related" music. Great to discover new stuff.

Gosh you are well read,,, I had to Google that.

No its a case of life imitating art. Ignatius' journey is a fictional one but Lucinda's was very real. Both equally traumatic though.
