I heard a really beautiful song today. It's not a new song but I hadn't heard it before. It was called "From Clare to Here" by Ralph Mctell. Are there any other beautiful songs that are rarely played that I have missed.

Mmm, I'm not sure if Ralph McTell is considered to be a composer of classical music, although he has composed at least one classic indeed: Streets of London.

His work is more influenced by folk music and country blues.

Apart from that, and more classical related: maybe you'd appreciate songs by 20th century classical composers, like Samuel Barber and George Gershwin. One of Barber's best-known songs is Sure on this shining night. Gershwin has composed loads of well-and-lesser-known songs that are worthwhile listening to.

Check it out. :)

BTW: one of my favourite rarely heard non-classical songs is Come wander with me. This lovely song is composed by Jeff Alexander (1910-1989), and beautifully sung by actress(!) Bonnie Beecher in an episode of the tv-series Twilight Zone.

Here's a videoclip of the song (mind you: not of the tv-series!):
EDIT: just found out, that if you check the YouTube thumbnails that become visible after the clip, you can see a selection of snapshots from that particular episode with Bonnie Beecher, whilst the song is been played. And there's also a link with 'real' moving pictures! :)

La moora by donovan from the very underrated lp hms donovan. The whole double lp is stunningly played and sung.

hi, i listened the song in the interpretation of Nanci Griffith and i enjoyed it thanks for share

The title speaks for itself, but please try to include some variety as to which artist and time period you add. This list is for the most beautiful songs we've ever heard, not simply the most beautiful songs of our era
1) A-ha - There's Never a Forever Thing
2) X Japan - Art of Life
3) Madonna - La Isla Bonita
4) Metallica - Nothing Else Matters
5) Bryan Adams - Summer of '69
6) Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
7) Claude Debussy - Claire De Lune
8) Geri Halliwell - Calling
9) Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing
10) Jarvis Cocker et al - Magic Works

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

Ah, beautiful songs...

There is a very beautiful Binchois song: Adieu ma très belle maitresse.

The Iberian song 'Con que la lavaré' from the 16th Century.

Some Dutch songs, that I know only from Sweelinck (Est-ce Mars?, Mein Junge Leben hat ein End, for instance). Also la Folie d'Espagne; many others I don't recall right now.

Many Lutheran chorales. Pressed for one: The Passion choral, O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden, or Ich ruff zu dir, also Jesu meine Freude; and the original Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern; also

Then, there is a wonderful song by Purcell: When I am laid in earth: a simple song, but how moving

The Xerxes largo, by Handel, another simple lyrical song

In the Cantatas Bach wrote several nice songs. One of my favorites is 'Es ist vollbracht'.

Several Schumann songs, from the Liederkreiss: simple, effective, marvelous.

After than I can't really remember anything except for pop:

Jacques Brell 'Ne me quittes pas' and 'Le plat pays' are moving in the extreme.

The theme of 'Barry Lyndon', by The Chieftains.

I don't include 'Yesterday', which is nice, but not quite in the league of the others.

'Yesterday' I don't like.
Hmm. let us see. What is beautiful? Many songs. No one is capable of similar work anymore. All we have is Lady gaga etc.
The Paul Simon Songbook. His first album demonstrated spectacular talent. There was some downhill after that, but also 'The Boxer' and of course "Bridge over Troubled Water".
Songs that I wish I had written.
Very underrated Donovan's "To Try for the Sun". OK, he was seldom good.
Jacques Brel's "Seasons in the Sun", a big hit for Terry Jacks. Clever.

I prefer Brel's La chanson des vieux amants. Beautiful.

Yesterday is a fine little masterpiece IMO, but my favourite McCartney song is I've just seen a face. My fave Lennon is In my life.

My favourite Brel songs, although it's impossible really to decide, could be Pourquoi faut-il que hommes s'ennuient? and Il neige sur Liège. Another fave gem is La quête. And what about La ville s'endormait?

Oh, and Marieke, Le play pays AND .... Amsterdam!!!

I also get the shivers from Orly, but is that really a song? It's more like a 'recitativo accompagnato'.

Yes, Brell is almost always good. I agree I should have mentioned Amsterdam, but it is not only about the tune: it is about the interpretation; whereas ne me quittes pas is beautiful even if played on an organ...
But I don't know every song by Brell. I'll search. Thanks.

PS: Orly is fantastic, but again no one but Brell would make it work.

Ian Dury's "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll" has a beautiful message. Perhaps the greatest song ever?

I think the beautiful songs of all the time as per my point of view are
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here,
Celion Dion - My heart will go on,
Back street Boys - As long as you love me.
