Steve,

Aye, it's a great episode, but now that I've thought more about it I realize I've posted the wrong clip.

This is more Day of the Dove moment and JC is the Beta XII-A entity.*

Joe

* Sorry, JC dude, but you can be such a noncorporeal being composed of pure energy sometimes.

This is about the most useful application of the horn loudspeaker principle.

It is indispensable in this application, but has fallen out of favour for succeeding designs from 1924 to present date, and quite rightly so.

I have a replica Nipper in my bathroom.
Looks quite realistic judging by the odd cry of surprise from visitors :)

Here's a picture of Ashley as a young man, conducting experiments into horn loaded headphones.

His real purpose (HiFi) and identity were kept a military secret.

Interestingly the picture you show was very good use of a horn for the narrow vocal range it was intended for.
That is the big mistake of most horn implementations - they try to use too few horns (small rooms or low cost) and end up sounding crap.
It was cutting edge technology back then - Horns have moved on. It seems you have not kept pace with developments?!

Yep you can't debate with a non-corpeal being that has no reason, back up data or logical approach can you.

Dev,

I think Tony has adopted the Charlton Heston approach to speakers: "I'll give you my Tannoys when you pry them from my cold, dead hands!"

In fact, if non-authorized personnel get too close to his Yorks they'll get nom, nom, nommed by the behemoths.

Joe

Yes Joe, but that was before Tony heard the AVIs. Now he's seen the light:D. I'm OK because I've lead a sheltered life and only ever heard and liked the big ugly monsters :).

BTW I thought "I'll give you my Tannoys when you pry them from my cold, dead hands (or was it fingers?)!" came from MIB.

Gentlemen,

We're debating in a vacuum. It's time for cold, hard facts — and a bake-off: JC's ADM's vs Tony's Yorks.

For added fun, it should be done blind.

Joe

I'd agree that some Tannoys â€" for example, the 15-inch HPD Berks I tried a couple of years ago â€" have an odd midband (a bit sucked out is how I'd describe it), but I don't feel that way about Monitor Reds in GRF cabinets.
Admittedly that's a combo I havent yet enjoyed.

Watch out for silicon nodules appearing in your basement.

Felix,

You are of course welcome to tunnel through the Earth to my basement any time you like.

Joe

Oh I don't know ?

The fireplace is so awful that it's worth preserving. It's a perfect piece of zeitgeist.

Maybe it should be donated to a museum . . .

. . . along with the speakers ?
