best speakers in the world? opinions?

Well, personally I'd most like to own a pair of the Model Nautilus. Never heard them, but I just can't resist their look-at-me style :D

i'm with peteh on this one. the original spikey ones driven by some edge amps would do me just fine for the rest of eternity thanks very much.
cheers

Leonard,

I would put forward the Egglestone Ivy's, knowing how a pair sound they must be in the top 3 they weigh over 800 LBS
MeadowLark Nightingales must rate a mention also too
The Blue Heron 2's are some superb speakers also at any price

By coincidence, the latest edition of one of the big German magazines has "World's greatest speakers" on the cover. They are Wilson-Watt Somethingorother. In appearance, they look something like the Grand Slamm (i.e., with aesthetics that are to speakers as current BMW 5-Series aesthetics are to cars (behave yourself, Michael!)), they weigh several tons and cost something resembling the GNP of Belgium.

I'd have to agree - I'm no speaker expert but having heard the Quads a few times I've always been gobsmacked at their sound. Sounds cliched, but they're not 'speakers' they're more a crystal clear window onto the music. :)

I had a pair of Eltax Liberty 3s once. Possibly the best speaker in the world ... to make a doorstop out of - not so small you could accidentally trip over them and just the right size to keep a heavy door open with - sounded shite though ;)

The Dayton-Wright wasnt available in Europe after they got damaged. I had to chose new speakers and briks was the next listenable speaker (IMHO).

Another vote for the quads. Heard some big horns at a hi-fi show once but I can't for the life of me think what they were called. Oh and for the money if you have the right sort of set up a pair of Rega Kytes. Had to sell mine because the room was too big. Boo Hiss

I would second that. I bought a pair of ESL57 a few years ago, used them for only a few hours, but had to store them because they were too wide for my room. After a few months not using them, I sold them for the same price I paid. That few hours of use is worth the few hundred quid and the hassle of buying and selling, but I never regret. One day I will buy a pair again.

Hermann,

I would love to hear the Dayton Wrights sometime,

I have a friend who has had a pair of the ELS 57s completely rebuilt by One Thing Audio, most people have just never heard Quads in this condition, my first reaction was that he must have hidden a subwoofer somewhere. Like most people I had heard the odd pair of Quads which had just gone down, EHT units flat etc, so would have subscribed to the general belief that the speakers have a magical mid and top but no real bass. That was obviously not how the speakers sounded when they left the Quad factory.

The bass is more then deep enough now for a normal room and more importantly very fast and tight. The mid and top are even better than I remember making this some speaker. It's quite frightening how much I can hear through these that I have just never heard before. Given that the Dyns I own are used for studio monitoring I just find that incredibly impressive.

Hmm, depends what mood I'm in...

Quad ESL-989's...

or maybe a pair of big Magneplanars or Apogees

or for that cone thang...

Big Meadowlarks or Tannoy Westerminsters.

or for something small and compact...

Verity Audio Parsifal Monitor or Epos ES11s

:)
