what are the "real world" benifits of bi amping?

Is this more benifical with hard to drive speakers, I have had experiances with monobloc's and did indeed notice the improvments, but unsure what biamping is meant to achieve and wonder if the improvments apply to matching particular amps too certain makes of speaker

can the amps be for instance 50w and 100w or must they be identical

your thoughts

I can answer one bit, they do not have to be identical. I had bi-amping en route to active, and I have a Linn LK85 and a Linn LK100 (85 and 100 watts respectively). Some other electrical parameter has to be identical in both amps (can't remember what), but the Linns are made that way.

To be honest, I didn't notice much difference between bi-amping and just normal single-amping (uni-amping?). Now, active, that's something else again...

Tones said exactly what I would have done (speaking as a deaf Linn user ;-) The figure in question is the gain (ratio of output to input voltage, expressed in dB) in Linn case this is nearly always 28.5 dB
