BMW Wins World Engine of the Year Award

You don't know what you are talking about. The torque curve is flat from 1300 RPM to 5500 RPM, with more than 300lb-ft. IOW, it picks up and runs exactly like a big V8 from barely above idle.

This engine is the entire point of the thread. It is entirely unlike any turbo engine you may have driven. Drive one, then tell us what you think. Oh, and go and read some physics:)

P.S.

i know my physics just fine thanks. If it has a genuine real world flat torque curve from 1300rpm then thats pretty impressive. I'll read into it more.

noting in that latter video.. that handling aside.. the larger V8 was still faster in a straight line.

not bad at all for what it is. getting the sense your a bit of a BMW fan boy though lol, never seen someone go to such lengths to defend an engine before. It's just a lump of metal ;)

I had that three litre lump in my last car (although without the turbo). Most boring car I ever had.

Actually, I retract that. I think you guys are talking about a petrol engine, whereas I had the 3litre oil burner (which also comes twin turbo).

What I would say is that I think turbo lag is unfairly maligned. My current car is pretty much all turbo and the hit when it comes on song is worth the drive to work. Part of the fun of driving it hard is driving within the power band and making sure you don't come out of a corner chugging along like a bus. Turbo lag can give you two cars for the price of one - a supermarket runabout or a screaming banshee depending how the mood takes you.
