They certainly amuse (and bemuse) the iPod generation, but so does the smallest tape Walkman!

I hope they sound nothing like the moulded plastic CD player, Tape, Radio things I experienced in the 90's.

Things much like this, used to fill an entire class-room with distorted sound - [IMG]

No, the old ones were much better.

Mid 70s to early 80s were best IMO.
I have a fabulous old JVC unit here with radio, cassette and 3" TV - mono so not too large and it sounds great.

JVC made a unit in the late 90's which had proper active speakers in it. It was called the RV-B90 and it was the first in a line of cylindrical portable radios they made. We took it apart and saw that it actually has a dual mono power amp setup!

The original came in army green and black or grey and black. It weighed about 15KG so was less than portable, it took 8 D batteries and 6 AA's. It's probably the best sounding radio that has ever been factory-produced. The new ones they make don't even compare.

I still have an army green one that my dad got years ago. We have used it for years in the car as the CD player, sitting it on the back seat. Saved my dad buying a better radio or any subwoofers for the car, it sounds that good!

It was featured in the film "Kevin and Perry Go Large" too :)
