Copy and pasted from the internet thanks to the wonderful new electronic MOT system :).

Nearside Rear 130kg, offside rear 60kg rear brake application uneven (3.7.A.5c) **DANGEROUS**
Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content at idle excessive (7.3.2c)
Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive (7.3.2b)
Exhaust emits dense blue smoke at idle (7.3.A.1b)
Advisory Notice issued
Offside Front wheel arch area brake pipe slightly corroded (3.6.B.2c)

The brake problem is not an issue, mechanic said he can sort that though he reckons the inspector was being over the top.

The blue smoke problem is worrying but I've known there has been a problem with the piston rings for ages. He said he will put some Wynn's stop smoke in it and that will be enough to pass the emissions.

What do others think?

What does it cost you to try it? The brakes will either be leaking cylinders or something stuck somewhere.

If it doesn't cost much do it. You keep telling us you can't afford anything better so what else can you do. Get it through the MOT, sell it with a 12 month ticket and buy something Japanese and reliable. It might not be as new, but it won't keep breaking.

On the other hand it's your money

That is the thing, in parts this car has cost me £3.50 (a new oil filler cap).

Apart from the piston rings nothing has gone wrong and I can keep filling it with cheap oil until the smoke gets noticeable under normal driving conditions.

The car still drives perfect, my plan is to keep it till October (another 2000 miles) when I get 1 year no claims and get a bigger engined car.

Its lost virtually no break fluid so I don't think there is any leaks, probably something as stuck as you say, either way he thinks is a quick and simple job.

Yes - go for it then sell with 12 months MOT. To be honest the fail points are not too significant - even the rear brake balance issue is 'relatively' OK! - although I'm sure someone will disagree in a minute........ ;-)

Got it done now :). Just needed a new break cylinder, cost £90 in total including the MOT, he didn't charge me for the stop smoke.

Told me the engine was warn but it doesn't stop it going and there is no structural problems with it so it should last another year before needing a new engine.

AT why don't you stop purchasing piles of shit?

Yep it runs perfectly fine and car has actually cost me very little. Its safe its legal, for £400 I if it conks out in 6 months so what?

That is a years motoring for £600 all in excluding insurance and it does 45mpg.

most unfair............:D
May be unfair, but a good question:D.

How can it be safe and legal when the brakes don't work properly and it's pumping out blue smoke? Do you not care about the environment at all?

The brakes have been fixed and so has the smoke. Also you could argue that older cars are better for the environment rather than throwing them a way and replacing with new ones.

The smoke wasn't even that bad but it was enough to fail the emissions test.

And it 45 to 50mpg its not exactly using up all the worlds precious resources is it?

I agree that replacing car is worse for the environment than keeping your old car in a "good" condition due to the amount of energy used to build cars in the first place. However, that does not mean that driving around in smoke generator is good for the environment. It's all a question of balance.

Anyway, glad you've got it sorted.

Good to see someone who pontificated about the polluting affects of cigarette smoke not giving a toss about their own car pollution.
