Does anyone know of a good one?

I've been trying the trial version of Collectorz.com Music Collector but its not working too well, keeps getting categories wrong, if it does find the right information from its sources it lists some titles under (for example) Brahms, Johannes and others under Johannes Brahms, that sort of really annoying thing.

What I need is one with a bit of intelligence.

Alan,

Have you tried Classifile®...?

It's a piece of UK software, found at

http://www.classifilesoftware.com/

where you can download a tial version...it's not bad - but I feel the asking price of £45.00 to be a tad on the high side...pretty basic, and you have to build your own database by typing everything in...!

You could also try Maestro Manager which you can find at

http://www.maestromanager.com/

Again, a trial version is available, which can be unlocked for $30.00 US.

It's easier in that a lot of info is available from "pick lists" and further record company databases can be purchased.

However, it "looks" are a bit naff...IMO...:)
Hope this helps...

You could always try something on MS Access...?

Dougie.

I persisted a bit further with Music Collector, even bought the official version ($30 I think). However, after realising that nearly every disc I input would require some kind of adjustment of its attributes to get the database consistent, I lost interest.

It is quite impressive that it can read the disc in the PC's CD-rom drive then search for all its info on the web, but even then the thought of going through this process for my entire CD collection was just too much.

No way would I be interested in a system where you have to type in the information yourself!

So still wondering what I'm going to do about insurance or just not bother.

IMHO it sounds like the inconsistent entries on the web databases like CDDB, gracenote or whatever it uses that is the problem, rather than Music Collector. Unless you can find a specialist classical database somewhere and matching software I can't see how a change of software will help. AFAIK they all pretty much use the same sources.
