Chavs

I just got back from all tomorrows parties in Pontins. Its quite a place.

It seemed to me that Julie B fatally misunderstood an important point.

She SEES 'chav' and 'working class' as one and the same.

They are not of course, 'chav' is a sub division of the working classes.

By not mentally seperating the two she missed the important point I feel that media attacks on 'chavs' are not attacks on the working class, just a sub-division.

She intermingled 'chav' and 'working class' as though the two terms were one and the same.

It seems to me that when the media are hot on the heels of 'chavs' they are really pointing out what they consider to be poor taste and behaviour - not some sort of class war.

I agreed with her on the point that the media frenzy has been OTT..

i find the expression chav as it's used here and elsewhere offensive. find yourselves someone else to pick on.

No it's not - chavs don't work, so they're not working class.

JohnHunt - ever get the feeling we've been here before???

7. You're in your car and you see a Chav on a bike, why should you try not to hit him? It might be your bike.

8. What's the difference between a Chav and a coconut? One's thick and hairy, the other's a coconut.

9. What's the first question at a Chav quiz night? What you lookin' at?"

10. How do you get 100 Chavs into a phone box? Paint three stripes on it.

They argued back and forth until they stopped for lunch. As they stood at the counter, one Chav asked the blonde employee, "Before we order, could you settle an argument for us? Someone who owns their own business isn't, by definition, working class, regardless of how they speak, their education, what car they drive, or any of the other witless drivel used by people who don't understand basic economic categories.

The working class is that class who neither own nor control any means of economic production, and exist by selling their labour. An old-fashioned idea, but it has the benefit of a precise meaning, unlike the sociological garbage which relies on analysing people's choice of baseball caps in order to say nothing meaningful about anything.

Personally while I agree with that definition from a historical perspective I think it's a little dated now and not as relevant as it used to be due exactly to class mobility which never exisisted in Marxs' time.

To me class distinctions today are down to "belief system" or level of education more than occupation or wealth. If a person still has the attitudes and demeanor of a working class person irrespective of what they do in life they are still working class. IMHO.
