My parents pre amp in their Marantz PM4000 seems to have given up, the turntable only plays in one channel now but when I connect the TT to my amp it works fine. So rather than getting the pre amp fixed I wondered if anybody had an old basic and cheap quality pre amp. It can be battery I am not bothered, its the Tandy type thing I am after.

I can only afford to pay £5 + P&P for it as they are only £15 new. I might have one some where so I see if I can find mine first but if anybody does have one they were thinking of throwing out just let me know. Its a Moving Magnet cartridge I think (the Ortofon om series, the cheap ones).

I've looked on ebay but only the high end ones seem to be on offer. The quality is not important as my parents won't notice any difference :D. Its only a Yamaha tt anyway.

u can have a Rotel RC870bx for £15 + p&p

mm stage and doesn't sound too bad either

Hi AT,

Are you loooking for a general pre-amp, or specifically a dedicated phono stage (phono pre-amp)?

If it's a cheap dedicated/standalone "phono pre-amp" for a T/T, then try searching for a second hand QED Discsaver or NAD PP1 which has now been superceeded by the PP2. New prices were £35 and £40 respectively.

Both are currently on auction on E-pay:

The NAD looks like a good bet, so long as the price doesn't go up by too much, although I think you'll be hard pressed to get better value for money than Rory's offer. :)

Rory how big is that phono amp? Do you know how much it will cost to send it via insured post? If you know the weight I can calculate that. It sounds too good for what I need it for but then its Christmas so it will make a good christmas present for my parents. Also how old is it?

Thanks

AT its a proper full width preamp- looks more or less identical to rc971 pre

postage is gonna be a £8-£10 i reckon

i think it supports MC as well- the only reason i dont' use it (apart from the fact i use an integrated) is that the cd input rca socket humms a little, but the remaining 7 or so inputs + the phono input work well.

it got a very good write up in 1989 HFC at a cost of £250
