class a

thanks for the link...very interesting. what does this then mean to the sound that is produced, say compared to B amps? in real terms - what difference would you hear? cheers

Having just bought a Class A amp (I had a A/B previously) I can say that, for me, the difference in sound was clear. Bocals are more lifelike, the bass is more substantial ... in short it gives a far more convincing performance. It's also a fine source of heat for your listening room. God only knows what I am going to do in the height of summer.

I have two Monarchy Audio SMPRO 70s (Class A) and am considering frying eggs on mine - Seriously good sound though. Class A tends to be very inefficient, generates a lot of wasted energy, not good for the planet, doesn't give out too many watts - But sounds really great!! IMHO :MILD:

if you can live with a heat it produces, it's a way to go. in most of the cases it sounds bloody good, realistic, with no hard edges, grain or harshness. i think i've never heard a bad sounding class A amp - even from krell whom i normally hate to the max

what is class a? what are the sonic gains?

Had a 2 hour session with my new, only 48 hour burned in, Luxman L-590 A II this evening. At this point all I can say is that it is just better than the BAT VK-300x SE that it has replaced. There is seemingly sooo much more depth to the sound ... there is more bass; vocals are more realistic; and at 30 wpc versus the 150 wpc of the BAT it, strangely, sounds so much louder .. I have not got the volume control beyond 25% of loudness in my 12" x 16" listening room.

I know that there is a lot more to come from the Luxman as it is fresh out of the box; and it still sounds a little edgy on some of the more treble'y passages of some tracks. I listened to a well run in version of its sibling, the L-550, and it displayed none of these edgy characteristics.
