Hi guys. This might get people going.

Relative newcomers to hi-fi (myself included) might be able to choose equipment more easily if we knew what did and didnt work (i know it is subjective, however there are some basic rules).

What i think would be useful is sharing all your experiences in the 1 thread, so a list of combos that did work well and a list of those that didnt per reply would be great. Maybe also a budget, mid priced and silly money list to suit all budgets.

Hope this gets everyone wracking their brains back to their old equipment, AHHH, Nostalgia.

    John

Naim with Spendor, Harbeth, Neat, KEF, and DeVore.

Any of the Nait 5 and its variants work well with monitors from the above listed.

The Arcam solo works well with the DeVore Gibbon 3, Spendor SP3/1p.

Audiomat Arpege Reference integrated is excellent with Spendor, Harbeth, Equation, DeVore.

    Creek works well with Epos.

Good: Sugden A21a with a pair of Rogers Studio I's
Bad: A cheap 'n' nasty Sony CDP into a Nait 2 and a pair of original 15 ohm Leak Sandwich's. Ow, my ears, I blame the CDP, as the Naim and speakers were good.

    I wonder...

    hi all

I have a majik cdp, but have recently been turned on the the idea of an MF KW550. I wonder what sort of pairing that would make? - As an alternative to tha activ way.

Although I dream about 803D's. It will be my humble Keilidh's that will have to serve me for the time being.

Do you think this could be an expensive mistake or can I really build a much better system one piece at a time via this root?

One very big 'don't' that I discovered the hard way

Cyrus and Monitor Audio: Ouch! My Ears! My Ears!

    On a more positive note

    WAD / Tannoy: Mmmmmm!

cyrus and pretty much any metal tweeter based speaker is a pretty awfull idea. Unless your talking cyrus dacXP/monoX which is all but neutral, and if anything slightly smooth, but at sheer cost.

B&W plus Rotel, i never understood how this combination was supposed to work, sounds bloody awful to me.
