Ok...
If you had one source so did not need the switching capability of a pre amp, would it be best to have the pre amp after the power amp?

So the pre amp does not deal with an un amplified signal and just adjusts the volume on an amplified signal?

Or am i being nuts?

Not a good idea IMO. You'd need a high power transformer, like a massive TVC, or a very high power pot.

What would be the point?

You are being nuts, I'm afraid. Think about the output impedance of the power amp and its interaction with the speaker's impedance.

You'd probably find you loose a lot of control over the speaker with a Tx inline too.

why dont you get a cd player with a built in volume control if you want to cut out the pre. (quad 99 I think has this, wadia etc).

I wasn't actually thinking of doing this. For some reason this crazy thought entered my mind and i couldn't work out if it was good or bad.
