Was at a village fete over the weekend and spied the cyrus on a bric-a-brac stall, i didn't throw myself at it as having tried a few Cyrus 2's back when with a gains only to consider the level of greater satisfaction to be had between trashing it or moving it on, must've been the jars of home made piccalilli sat near to it that took me over, i then found myself to be a little more interested to see the amp to be a nice clean improved mk ll version of the Cyrus one, how much please...that's a fiver... is it working.. yes, well ok then, so i took the punt returned home a little after, opened it up, the fuses were good, no other visible problems, bad smells, so plugged it in and fired it up and all was well, then moved to a pair of better speakers and much to my surprise.. she sounded good,with no sense of the muffled and constricted sessions of torture that i suffered from the Cyrus 2.
I know for sure that at least one of the cyrus 2's i had was the Mk2 version, and trying different speakers etc gave no improvement, it was awful every time, not to say that this Cyrus 1 Mkll is awe inspiring,but it is without the fatigue of the cyrus2 and is fairly listenable, perhaps enough for me to consider holding on to it .

The Cyrus 1 and 2 are the same amp in terms of the circuit.
the C2 has a larger transformer and proper MC phono stage.

Both in Mk2 form are superb, though much slated by the golden eared.
 
Not bad - though for a fiver one can hardly complain in the value for money stakes....
 
Mine's still doing sterling service in the office (fed by a MacBook Pro > Meridian 203). Sounds fine - and 'yes' it did get slagged off by people with more money than me in 1989.
 
sept 88 hi-fi choice lab report : 'the measured performance of the cyrus ll two is virtually identical to it's predecessor ( cyrus 1 two) and where there is a difference it is often in favour of the origional.
and later.... somewhat contradicting Paul Millers findings in last months system review, Martin Colloms panel found the new Cyrus two a significant improvement over the origional.

as with other reveiws of the Cyrus 2, Alvin Gold recommends , another say's he agrees with Gold in what constitutes a bad amp, in theory "but with what we endorse were poles apart".
and on and on it goes, i also know those that think it a fine amp, and as they always have, know just as many that dont, perhaps the room, the gear used, even the music played, power.. or batch off the line, all will make a difference , positive for some negative for others, who knows but whatever has come together this time, this little Cyrus one mkll isn't half bad, even for a fiver :)
