Don't feel so bad, you are in good company:D. During the Christmas break, I tried to take pictures of a 6 month old baby who couldn't sit still or stop blinking or looking at his mum. I think I took about 25 pictures and only liked about 5:(.

The only thing I would say against the D70 is the LCD display is just a bit too small. I have taken pictures that look like real crackers on the LCD but are decidely average when downloaded. Even zooming in on the D70 LCD doesn't show all the faults.

Yes, babies are a challenge. I have 100's of our little guy and this one's about the only decent one!

I don't think that the old lenses will give you all the required functionality in the new DSLR system of Canon.

Canon 400D and Nikon D40 (or D80) are the obvious choices.

The D70's display is 1.8 inches but it displays images with a slim black border and text at the bottom so it the image size is effectively only just bigger than a 1.5inch display :( .

    The D40/D80 display's are 2.5 inches :)

My opinion of all of the LCD displays on all of these SLRs is that you can get a quick idea of if its worth keeping, as such I do not worry so much on ultimate quality of the screen.

Another thing to consider is that these screens will not work to take a shot. Some people miss this fact having been used to point and shoots. Canon/Nikon DSLRs cannot be virtue of the design be used in this way. The Oly E10/E20 could because it was not quite an SLR I am not sure about more recent offerings.

The pentax mentioned is worth a look. I believe it has built in VR and weather proofing solutions. But the trade off, is buying into a lesser system... though some will disagree with pentax lenses having a good following. The pentax has a good "feel" about it. Certainly worth a look.

The canon equiv' just felt wrong to me. Too small and didn't sit right. I've previously used Nikon so maybe it's partly just familiarity.

The D80 is a lovely body IMO. The viewfinder alone made the extra cost worth it over the D50, but the D50 is a great camera too.
I've not had a play with the D40 so can't comment. Certainly looks like another great option.
I'd have liked weather sealing on the D80, but couldn't justify splashing out the extra for D200.

As others have said, give them a go.

    sorry, cross purposes?

I meant the viewfinder rather than the screen; the nikons 5700 electronic one is less than ideal. i wondered if the ones on DSLRs are any better?

Pop into your local jessops or such and have a look through the D80. It's big and bright and simply great. Don't think there's much that comes close to it.
