Distortion when using turntable

Bear with me. I'm a newcomer here. After not using my older Sony system for a long time, I put an LP on the turntable. I get a roaring sound and distortion. What went bad in the system? What can I do, if anything, beyond getting a new system? By the way, I tried a different turntable and got the same result.

My brother had a similar problem like yours .Found out when he took the speaker grills off that all of the speaker surrounds had rotted out..That was where all of the bad distortion was coming from
