Hi Tim
welcome to the forum

Im not a headphone fan myself, nothing against them just i have no need for them as yet.
Maybe if you could be more specific as to what headphones you are interested in then people may be able to chat about them

I do quite a bit of headphone listening, Tim, because my daughters don't like my style of music! I did some reviews here:

You'll find my "thoughts on headphones", and reviews on the Grado 125s I bought, plus the Graham Slee Solo headphone amplifier. See also the thread on headphone amps on

I think PBirkett is the local headphone king - he's just got these new super-dooper top model Beyerdynamics. In addition, there are the specialised headphone sites Head-fi and Headwize.

I`ve got two headphones, BEYER DT931.and AKG240DF.

i`m happy with 931, but Some time treble too are grating when i listen pop

another one 240df the sound is fine, but it`s so hard to driver,600ohm.

Hi Tim,

I've owned those DT931's and I agree with you, far too bright and thin for my tastes. Perhaps you should consider the DT880's as these are much better....

Hello PBirkett

For bright and thin sounds ,we could change the cable to improve DT931 sound quality! but is`s difficult to find the suitable cable and pre for it.

also i heard dt880 is a very good headphone, yet i don`t have chance to audition.
:(

Always wondered about the joys of headphone listening, no room to screw up the recorded information must be a bonus!

Got me a very nice bargain yesterday, a trip to Wales resulted in me shlepping a pair of these home!

http://www.stax.co.jp/ENG/SR007-E.html

Not used them yet, advertising them already. Need to get a dac or something to try them out with, but I owned some Lambdas many years ago, and still remember the uncanny realism of everything (even if it was going on in my head - GET OUT MA!)

So why don't we use these things more often, especially when some spend hours in front of a PC.

Yeah - Stax are VERY expensive, but for the technology compared to Quad Electrostatic speakers, they're not so bad...

I use Sennheiser 580s and a Rega Ear when I can't get away with speaker listening - and the combination is pretty fluid and musical - not the last word, but good for the price I paid. The music I put through them this morning while having my breakfast was sounding pretty damn good :)

How much did u pay for them?

i think uk price is unreasonable.

Believe me here, the Welsh price I paid for them was VERY reasonable:SCIDB: :sheep:

Geez, these are good!!!!

Sat here at the PC listening to Solomon Burke through the Stax' fed direct from the balanced outputs of an Audio Aero Capitole 11 cd player.

I know ear speakers like the Stax's are generally silly money, but if you are a serious music lover with neighbours, they might be worth their weight in gold. You simply cannot get this level of detail and connection with normal setups. Fair enough there's no soundstage to speak of, but the purity of tone and intimacy with vocals is very beguiling.

I reckon I could get used to this, bet the neighbours could too:D

I've just had to invest in headphones for the first time since I lived with my parents (now my kid's bedrooms are next to my study). I tried a few of the popular makes and found them all a little bright. I finally settled on a pair of Grado RS-2's running from a Musical Fidelity X-Can v2 and X-PSU.

My next tweak will be to bypass the volume on the X-Can and run the sources directly to my Audio Synthesis Passion and thence to the X-Can.

I guess the Staxx must be quite good as you don't see them advertised second hand very frequently.

I've tried Stax. They werent for me, a bit too audiophile for my tastes. Obviously, I can see why audiophiles like them... ;)

Yep I would say so:) I have a pair of Sennheiser 600's for comparison and the 600's do sound more dynamic. But if you want to relax with your music, and get that emotional connection, the Stax' are in a different league IMO.

I'd say, they are the first phones I have used which don't sound like phones, more like intimately close and ultra pure speakers. No brightness or fatigue, tube warmth with resolution that cannot be bettered.

I can see where you are coming from, but for my needs they are a truly unique proposition, you forget they are headphones and just revel in the music. Not really for heavy dance music though;)
