The pictures aren't really showing looting, from what I can see all of the people are getting food. Now yes technically they are stealing it but at the end of the day what other option do they have? So basically any caption which says they are looting, be they black white or something else, whilst technically accurate, does not really take into account the situation these poor people find themselves in.
Anyway, read what the caption at the article you posted says: '
I have no idea who wrote these captions but I suspect it was the photo agencies'. Then look at who the photo agencies are:
Pics 1-4 - Associated Press (looters)
Pic 5 - The Canadian Press (looters)
Pic 6 - AP again (looters)
Pic 7 - Agence France-Presse (finders)
To me it seems more likely that this situation whereby blacks are portrayed as looters and whites as finders is more likely to be an unfortunate coincidence rather than a conspiracy designed to somehow infer criminality in blacks - such a conspiracy would required the co-operation of AP, The Canadian Press, Agence France-Presse, and Yahoo...bit of a stretch that isn't it?
Now whilst its possible that someone at yahoo was responsible for all of the captions and thus was able to create this manipulation, even the guy pointing out the pictures and their captions reckons it is unlikely (yahoo mostly take news content from other sources and generally provide news from a wide-ish variety of sources, and thus I feel they're actually less likely to be guility of the deliberate manipulation of news events than other media outlets).
Scepticism of the media is good, but I can't help but feel in this case is looking a bit too closely and trying too hard to find a deliberate manipulation rather than something unfortunate and probably coincidental.
