Drives....+winRar

If I understand your earlier post correctly, David, the licence Driver Detective (DD) is suggesting you buy is the one for WinRar. Winrar is a program, not a driver. This could be construed as a little 'creative thinking' by DD! Obviously, if DD is hunting around your system looking for unregistered software then they are looking to earn a little extra from 'partners' fees.

My advice would stay the same. If you've paid for DD then there is nothing else to be bought. Drop them a line and tell them that you didn't buy their program so that it could hunt around your system looking for ways to part you from your money!

Uninstall WinRar and install 7Zip. Run DD as per the previous post and keep your fingers crossed!

Thats what you would have thought and thats what I would have thought.

They do seem to have the quaint notion of doing this 40 day trial thing unless I come with the dosh for a winRar licence.

In fcat the drivers I have downloaded during this "trial " period have lasted a week max....not 40 days...

The comments given in that link do little to inspire confidence....better people than me have got stuck with it.

So...... I don't know.

You suggest installing "7zip" and seeing it that is sufficient to satisfy DD's requirements?

Worth a try I guess! (Thanks:))

(Contacting the people at DD sounds like a complete waste of effort if those notes are anything to go by.)

Did the scanner work previously or has is never worked properly? Is it USB/serial or does it use a SCSI interface? Does the scanner try to do anything at all when you ask it to perform an action?

Personally I'd uninstall winRAR, and then uninstall DD (sounds like the free/trial version is a waste of time and they just use it to get you to buy the full version).

Next I'd do as Seeker suggested and remove all drivers and applications associated with the scanner (is the picture capture wizard part of the same suite of app's?). Restart and check your PC is happy with everything else. You might want to check on the scanner manufacturer website for the latest drivers and download them. Follow the installation sequence for the scanner as laid out in whatever documentation came with it.

If that still doesn't work then I might be tempted to remove all the drivers/apps again, restart and see if XP can operate the device using its stock drivers - i.e. just use whatever graphics app you might have and the file - import action and see if that works.

Judging by this and previous posts it looks like your USB has died. You stated that after a sudden loss of power neither your scanner or other "drivers" possibly USB drives no longer work. You have tried reinstalling the drivers and it still does not work and more than one device has failed. That looks like a hardware problem.
I suggest that you talk to some near you that knows more about computers than you do and may be able to diagnose or fix your problem. Throwing money at unnecessary programs is not going to help.

Yes, its worked fine until I tripped the house fuse trying to get my drier to work.

Works off a usb port.

yes it tries....

It just says its not connected up properly

no

I think its part of windows......xp has that facility (or should/did have)

Everything else seems to be ok so I don't want to change any thing too drastically.

True I need to check out Musteq again and see if I can find a download.

Thanks for the ideas; I'll think about this.

Yes, I suspect you are right.

It might come to that.

Thanks :).
