Dunkyboy suggested a bake-off on a thread started by Alanbeeb. I replied but have realised that the thread was in the Review section. I suggest that we discuss arrangements here.

I'm sure the ATMs would like to meet the Dax Decade, and that Alan has some interesting options to try.

Ah, good plan Peter! There are a few more Edinburgh members we might be able to tempt... Crustyloafer? Hodgesaargh? Anyone else..?

I should be able to make it, just let me know what your plans are. I'm my AE1s and A308 will be most welcome. I'd offer to demo my Stentor 3 but it's probably too heavy.

just realised that should have been ATCs - a Freudian slip about cost perhaps - thought it should have cost more?

So we need a date/time and venue. Could room size and neighbours be the criteria. I have 15x15 with high ceiling in a terraced house but neighbours who do sometimes go away! I'll find out their holiday plans.

Any other suggestions?

We could use one of the demo rooms in my store one evening. This would give everything a fair chance without any neighbour problems. It would also give you access to a wide range of other equipment to play with too.

Well I'm happy to host. My system is in my bedroom, which is pretty big as far as bedrooms go (about 16' x 13'), but might be a bit of a squeeze for more than three or four people. My neighbours are generally very forgiving - anything up to 11:00pm is fair game on weeknights, and more like 1:00am on the weekend.

Also, I'm not sure the ATCs are going anywhere - each stand-speaker pair weighs about 52kg and I live up three flights of stairs so as you can perhaps imagine I'm somewhat loathe to move them!

As for a time, I should be good for just about any weekend (Fri/Sat/Sun) after this one.

Now all we need is some consensus! ;)

Does your shop not have neighbours?! As long as you don't try to sell us anything!
I'd quite like to hear 2-channel SACD through one of the Linn universals.... we could compare it with my Shanling if there was an opportunity.
I could bring along the Shanling and the Electrocompaniet ECD-1 DAC, but I think the quad electrostatics are a bit big to move. I'd offer to host but the speakers and more than 2 peeps in my listening room is a crowd, plus I'd really want to wait until wife and child are out for the day.
I'd certainly like to hear the Dunky's ATC actives and Ditton's AS dac.

Oooh! I like Crusty's suggestion even better! And I can bring my speaks as long as I can get someone to give me a hand.........

well it looks as though we have a venue, and have good idea what kit we are each bringing. I guess interconnects and powercables take back seat unless any one has a particular enthusiasm. Crusty is in charge of stands, of all manner (he spells carefully).

As for when, all agree it cannot be this weekend. Are Saturdays or Sundays preferred?

And I guess each bring about six or so CDs of 'what we like best'

{edit: if others with experience of organising bake-offs have some useful tips, pl post - or send as PM if that more appropriate!!}

How about next Saturday evening or Sunday during the day. The shop does have neighbours but mainly of a retail type and therefore not open in the evening so as I said this should not be problem.

Interconencts, power cables, speaker cables and equipment stands can all be reasonably accomodated here.

If we can all agree on a date and time I think we are just about set.

Give me a call at the shop on 0131 2297267 if you have any futher ideas.

Chris.

Will need to get a pass from SWMBO, but shouldn't be a problem for next Sat.... If anyone needs help with transport or heavy items let me know. What time is kick off?

Time and place sounds good to me.
Dunky - where abouts do you live? i could pick up pete and his DAX (a few mins from me) then get you.

tips on bake-offs? ooh I dunno...

How about..
1. get someone to write down all the music you play, and put it on the net after
2. get someone to take a digi camera
3. dont bring tooo much kit, theres a limit to how much you can swap on the day.

thats a good start!

thanks. that seems like good advice, however obvious in retrospect.

1. Alanbeeb is fan of classical; I like accoustic folk and jazz; etc. Who wants to be the music monitor?

2. Who's the David Bailey then. I've been given a digicamera but its still in the box!!

3.
* front end:
a) AS transport & Dax Decade dac/pre-amp {prob bring my interconnects}
b) Shanling
c) Electrocompaniet ECD-1 DAC
d) others?? Linn universal or Meridian 507 ??

* amp:
a) MF A308
b) ?

*speakers:
a) ATC Active 20
b) something JMlab-like??

!
You forgot the food and copious quantities of alcohol.

It's raining in Crieff and I've got the blues playing.

1: I'm sure we'll just take it as it comes

2: I have digital camere duties covered, have a Canon EOS 10D with 380EX flash

3: Each person can bring three pieces of kit excluding cables etc.

4: With regards to the alcohol and food situation I suggest that you all chip in towards me and I'll arrange suitable consumbles. Let say a £10 each, for food and £10 each for drink which I think is fair for the time and trouble of it taking part on my premises.
