I want to buy this album, but it's an SACD. There does not appear to be a normal CD version, although I have seen (irl) a hybrid SACD version. Does anyone know if all SACD versions are hybrid (ie contain a CD layer that will play in a normal CD player)? Play.com suggests that it won't play in a normal CD player.

Hi Isaac

Julians right, it is a hybrid. Quite a good album actually. First couple of listens I thought it dead boring but now it's not bad.

Ditto, thought it bland, but actualy there are a lot of subtleties to it and it grows on you. The SACD sounds superbly natural.

I bought it today at the Heathrow show.

First comment is that the SBM DSD recording, even after conversion to PCM on the CD layer, is absolutely superb. Bass is deep and full, piano and vocals are very natural, drums have great snap and punch, and it gels beautifully. I would certainly be interested to hear it as an SACD.

On the music... I immediately found "The Rain Falls" to be an outstanding track. Also "I got you to see me through" and "Leaves me wondering" are very good.

As to describe the music... There's a similarity to Dido in that the songs are about life and love, and also a bit in style. However, McEvoy is faster and more rythmic. More lively. Recommended.

IMHO Yola is a superb album.

And it's worth buying an SACD player for;)

FWIW I picked up another five SACD's this weekend. And every single one of them is superb, especially the Deluxe edition of Tommy. It's quite amazing to me how involving these sound on £500 quids worth of "Jap crap";)

I think it was one of the first SACDs I bought.

Does anyone else think the bass is overblown?

I've got a REL sub and one some tracks it just booms..... I suspect the production was designed to work on crappy midi systems.
