It's more efficient to produce electricity in a power station than a tiny car engine. However, the argument that making a new car creates more pollution than driving an old one seems to hold some water.

I'd like to see more investment in clean power before we start all buying electric cars. It isn't going to happen though, is it, given the money to be made from 'dirty' fuels.

Pure electric only cars are merely a way of moving pollution away from cities (especially historic cities with heritage to protect).

However hybrid technology can be useful in that it converts otherwise wasted energy into used power. The original Honda Insight was astonishing. Great to drive, fantastic economy, only purchase price and 2 seats only dampered sales. But it had hundreds of patents on different innovations that made it more efficient. The developement of lighter and more efficient is a good thing. Things like gentle braking putting that energy as charge back into the battery (instead of being disipated as heat).

I am a fan of the Gen1 Insight.
Less so the more practical Gen2 and the Prius ...... but the developement work is good. IMO.
