As if it wasn't enough that i had to read through the new RA brochure from cover to cover this morning, self inflicted, but later on today i came cross the most important upgrade you'll ever be likely to make.

http://www.audiyo.com/product_desc.php?plid=7&cat=54

2nd from bottom, little bottle of liquid.

one of my friends in the states had some arrive two days ago, and lo and behold it's that spray on damping compound you can buy from any car audio shop for buttons for gallons..

he's pissed.

Welcome to High End Audio. They want to know why sales are down. Rest my case. Your buddie should get a refund.

i rate their clever little clock very highly.

as good for telling the time as any digital clock i've used.

there is one use for their pebbles in bottles, but anything of similar dimension does the same trick. even a mug...quite fittingly.

if you have little standmount speakers, with flat tops, place a mug on either the inside or outside corner of each speaker, right at the front.

hey presto, wider or narrower sound stage.

quick easy and repatable....

no doubt some effect difraction effect.

Seriously? Think it'll work on me Ns1000s - they ain't small but do have a flat top. I shall have to try it if I have a spare moment tomorrow.

I think I'll buy some to damp my vinyl down. My needle bounces all over the place when I'm dancing to my Hungarian folk records.

mhuk and ants: seriously it's a legit difference.

works best on speakers where the tweeter is centred L-R across the speaker and as close to the top as possible, NS 1000 tweeter might be a little low.

epos 12 and stuff of that size its night and day.

I meant the website :)

Is the mug "trick" the reason why some peoepl place Chinese chess pieces on their kit? How does it work?

it affects edge difraction, if you have pretty straight edged tweeter with little shaping in the faceplate it helps soften the transition arround the box edges.

so allows you to widen or narrow the sounstage.

i would guess the chess pieces are a similar thing, though much less effect.

I'll try to find the chess piece link: they're round bits of wood that don't look like chess pieces.

You mean it disrupts the "shape" of the speaker? Sound travels upwards and then backwards (enough to make an audible difference)?

yep ......the last speaker I built had the same ...I rounded all the edges 20mm radius....this had a big effect on the the finished unit over the square edged prototype ...its definitely a defraction thing. Also by off setting a tweeter near one edge helps too . Theres the weight aspect and damping caused by objects placed on the top ....don't use a table lamp !

I have a DVD player extensively modded for CD replay by '3-D Sonics', of this forum, which has along with much tweakery (Audiocom Superclock, LC Audio "Zap-Filter 2" discrete, zero feedback analog stage, C37 lacquer, lots of oscons..) some tweaks which Thorsten describes as being "left field" - Chinese chess pieces on certain circuit boards, crystal points on the transport - makes it nice to look at when you lift the lid :-) ...and... it sounds superb! I take the tweaks as a package, trusting the "designer" - rationally I can't understand the mechanism which underlies the effect produced but I accept it makes a difference.

Diffraction effects are a very real issue.

Imagine a series of small secondary sources re-radiating sound along the sharp edges of the enclosure front baflle...that's essentially what happens. More of an issue at high frequencies though.

I assume that's what the designer of my JBL 250Ti's had in mind?
