Favourite singers (female only)

Has no-one mentioned Eddie Reader, Rokia Traore, Nahawa Doumbia, Najma Akhtar or Sheila Chandra yet? Or am I getting too world musicky for some...?

Are we talking about their singing ability, or the quality of their records? Lots of good female vocalists seem to end up singing bland dross, for some reason.

Anyway, no-one seems to have mentioned Kate Rusby, so I've give her a mention!

puline henry,
tony braxton,
mary j blige,
joan armatrading x
lolleta holloway
still more, but the quality of the msic does have a lot to do with the way they perform and sing to the rythem, although like most of them play an instrument they are very talented.

Callas? in the same catagory as JB for me! I can tolerate Montserrat Caballe's vib because of her incredible control and passion though!

Janet Baker - not for me thanks Stereotype! too much vibrato. Give me a pure voice any day!
Her impure voice sold more songs than yours, soloist? :) Dame Janet's vibrato is probably a little less than that of Schwarzkopf (who has the greatest voice of all on record, imv, and anyone who disagrees has no ears, or heart, or neither) and of Joan Hammond, Nilsson, Flagstad, Stich-Randall, Popp, Kirkby and a million more who have sold literally millions of records. Even more than you, surely. :)

So the great musical public doesn't like pure voices, apparently.

To add a few more loverly girls, for this mainly non-classical section: Patsy Cline (Crazy), Elaine Paige and Shirley Bassey. (And they all have plennya vibrato, btw).

P.S. Does anyone remember the rather delicious Julie Felix? Deserves a mention, I think. Not the purest tone (in the usual sense of the word :) ), but expressive and flexible and really keeps the attention.

OOh, me? sell records? ha! play on words - one of the boats I sail is called a 'Solo', which makes me a soloist!

Judith Durham? Maggie Riley? pure voices... sold records...

But yes, there seems to be an acceptance amogst the majority for singers who need to sing either side of a note to give a 'good average'!

aida to me was m. callas super album, i still have the box set, i also like the wonderfull voice of tine marie when she was managed by rick james under the motown label,

I'm gonna thwow some names out:
Carolyn Sampson, Kate Bush, Lucia Popp, Maggie Reilly, Johannette Zomer, Suzanne Vega, Elly Ameling, Agnetha Fältskog, Anne Sofie von Otter, Alison Moyet, Kathleen Ferrier, Mary Hopkin, Frederica von Stade, Grace Slick, Sara Mingardo, Sinéad O'Connor.

I much prefer Harriett Wheeler (I wish she'd make another record), Skye (from Morcheba) Edie Brickell, Alison Goldfrapp or Christine Collister but but what about Hayley Wesentra for a pure voice?
Her music isnt to my tast but I bought Pure for my Mum (honest!) - who always hated Kate Bush and Westenra's rendition of Wuthering Heights seems a little bit easier on the ear.

Billie Holiday, Joan Armatrading, Sinead O'connor, Joni M, Sandy Denny, Christine Perfect/Mcvie, Rikki Lee Jones, Annie Lennox, Aretha Franklin, and Dusty S. add Nina Simone.

Dont like female pop singers...
