Could anyone advise on the following please. I'm looking to replace the flimsy fig8 mains leads that came with my active AVI speakers, with something a bit more capable. Were I to undo the IEC end of a replacement powercord, what gets attached to where on the fig8 connector?

    Thks

errr...if you need to ask etc.

do you mean the Telefunken two pin mains lead ?

this should be live and neutral ......I've a feeling that these plugs have been outlawed ...as you can't now get them [I haven't seen any for a couple of years]

Yes telefunken. AVI still use them and so I'd be surprised if they'd been outlawed as you say. They also appear to be the connection on sky boxes.

What is confusing is an IEC will only plug into a component one way, however the telefunken will either way. So I assume therefore it doesn't matter which way you connect up the live and neutral? Also what happens to the earth.

what I meant was the seperate plugs rather than the style...you can buy any number of moulded replacment cables to fit the telefunken socket ...but not the plug to build your own [that I've been able to find].

is there enough room to fit an iec socket ?

There's a seller on Ebay selling the telefunken plugs. Re fitting an IEC socket, there isn't enough room in my opinion, the amp paks on the back of the AVI's aren't very big.

I've seen RussAndrews do an adaptor allowing you to fit a standard IEC terminated cable. One extra connection I know, but my be the easiest route.

Back to my original question though. Were I to undo the IEC plugs on the end of a couple of mains leads and look to connect them up to the telefunken plugs, what goes where and I assume the earth gets ignored?

yes you've showen me again you can't get the plugs but you can the sockets as stand alone items.

    solutions ....

    buy the adaptor
make an adaptor from the moulded end ..and an iec socket which should cost about 50p ..

ouch £100 notes for silcone rubber insulated silver plated three core ....does something strike you as odd ...if the cable cost £25/m and your buying 3.7m for a £100 he's not making any money ...unless he's telling porkies or am I missing something ?

I'll see if I can source some fig 8 plugs !

Sorry guys, but unless I'm missing the point here, could I respectfully ask my original question again. How do you wire up the telefunken end, or is it not possible with a 3 core cable.

I may be missing something here - please don't believe everything I say or you may electrocute yourself...

There is "proper" electronic gear which has live neutral and earth. Three wires - mostly (sometimes earth is omitted). You really should connect these according to the rules.

There is also a "floating" arrangement, where the equipment has no exposed parts which could become live (in theory - possibly even in practice). These have two wires and unless you are Enid Lumley it probably doesn't matter which is "live" and which is "neutral". There are regulations which are supposed to ensure your safety. Old televisions used to be wired like this. No earth connection.

    As I say, don't believe a word I say without double-checking - I am not responsible...

well it does but .....you just turn the plug over !...

the unit obviously has no ground connection to the wall socket ...so don't try and make one !

connect blue to one terminal and brown to the other .....

My point about the ebay seller was that he is obviously using 3 core Black Rhodium mains cable and wiring it to figure 8 plugs so it must be possible - how it's done and what cable goes where in the plug I haven't a clue.
