    do you have a computer?

Id seriously consider getting a logitech squeezebox (google it or do a forum search).

I will never go back to a boggo cd player of any price.

Also, they're quite inexpensive, and all you'd need is active speakers, or a power amp and some speakers.

Get any stands/supports/cables second hand and as cheap as possible, just to get you going.

as an example, look at these high quality studio monitors (have the amps built in). Just get some basic stands, and a squeezebox.

Neat, easy and sounds fantastic. Really.

    probably right.....

....but I would say I was highly surprised at the difference a heavy duty pair of stands made to my Ruarks.

    Astonished actually.

i'd also recommend the squeezebox. there are also a number of integrated amps with built in dacs as well from accuphase, esoteric, naim, bryston and possibly others. most of these can be found for arround the £1000 price mark 2nd hand and cater for most musical tastes. speakers are a very personal choice though and probably along with the room you put the kit in and their positioning contribute most to the character of the sound. i'd suggest lots of demoing to see which brands do what you like and then trawl the 2nd hand sites until you find a bargain.
