FM aerials

With the BBC now rolling out the so called 'HD' radio I'd expect the online feed to surpass FM. It does already on many stations with only R3 & R4 being better on FM via a good tuner.

Radio at 320kbs (or 256) can sound very good indeed.


Agreed. The 320kb/s AAC+ should, with a decent DAC, better FM by a significant margin, and better the Freeview and Freesat streams, which at best are 192kb/s MP2.

But I am convinced that once you cross the 128kb/s threshold with MP3 or better coding, the quality of the music is determine by the amount of dynamic compression applied. Less is better.

Yes, once the replay medium attains a minimum standard, focus then falls on what happened before the music reached your home.
it is similar to the diminishing returns law when buying audio electronics. After a certain point of performance is reached it becomes increasingly difficult to detect or justify further gains.
