anyone one else notice this ......

hidden in amongst another stealth tax [£6 on land lines to fund broadband !!!???] announced by this shambles of a government ...

termination of transmission on fm by 2015

theres going to be a shed load of top end tuners on ebay .....

Only if people are daft. It's a proposal, not a target and governments never achieve those anyway. Read the small print and it says digital take up of 50% at time of announcement - it's in single figures.

A vast amount of perfectly good kit, which unlike TVs don't need replacing - so big Green issue. Plus you are taking on the Archers lobby.

I wouldn't be selling my tuner any time soon, but it won't be delayed by a few nerds muttering about quality - it's just not a practical proposition. A few additional (mostly shit) stations have not proved attractive enough to the masses who are happy with what they have.

agreed .....white paper I think

but do you remember that this was what happened with the analogue tv ?

they then sold off the analogue tv freq to the highest bidder ..

time will tell ....but I'm glad I sold on my top notch fm tunner a couple of years back !

DAB is shite I agree but I don't find much worth listening to on FM at the moment. R1 daytime output is nauseating and I;m not a classical fan.

6 Music on the other hand is awesome, if you can forget about George Lamb of course.

I;m not a classical fan.

.

That's the key. Radios 3 & 4 are still very much worth listening to, when they're not being squeezed. The OBs can still be stunning.

DAB is shite and the take up is pathetic. Internet radio will be the way....but FM will be around for longer than 2015, trust me. Even if this 'proposal' was accepted and it was full steam ahead, when did a govt last meet any sort of objective on time - other than filling in an expenses form?

Steve

I do like radio 4 and I agree that t'interweb is way forward, chap on HiFi world who has bee in bonnet about DAB is right. Been backed up to the hilt because it appears to be technologically advanced solution.

However, it's not really much of an innovation in broadcasting, whereas t'interweb is. Although it does give a roaming capability.

Is DAB IP based or does it work on a TDM / FDM type data transfer method?

on of my fondest memories of fm was building my first directional aerial and dx ing to pick up the most distant station ....

DAB, i only tune in to chill or jazz on dab, going back to fm, what will happen to pirate stations?
nando.
