Used Elma Stepped Attenuator 22 steps not sure what "k" it steps in. Just been checked over by Glenn Croft last week and had a couple of resistors changed so all are in tolerance. Considered the best stepped attenuator you can buy, cost new assembled in the £250 mark looking for £100.

A volume pot; They step up or down (this one is in 100K steps) by increasing or taking off resistance by using resistors in the signal path. Less resistance more volume. They are a lot more transparent then a tapered control which you get with most amplifiers.
