Hi,

I have just noticed this funky looking device for getting rid of record warps.

The Furtech DVF-1 is a interesting looking device.

It cost $1480.

Well it's cheaper than the Air tight version.

I wonder if my trouser press would work :)

...... actually, with a couple of thin sheets of glass it just might!

The Air Tight is the real deal. Works pretty well.

Cheaper than the Clearaudio version as well. Though at $1480 I'd still be expecting it to work pretty well too :) It's a lot of money if it didn't. Actually $1480 is what about £750 ... That probably brings it into the realms of worthwhile investment ... for record dealers anyway. A badly warped record is pretty much worthless, even if its an otherwise very valuable item.

BTW I wouldn't have thought the trouserpress idea is a goer ;). As I understand it these record flatteners work well mainly because of the well controlled nature of the heating up, cooling down and temperature control. You want to take it to just the right temperature for the vinyl to relax enough to unwarp and no more and then slowly bring the temperature back down again (so I've been told anyway) ... presumably you need to ensure that the heat is evenly spread and that the surfaces are spotless, and the disc scrupulously clean as well. I know the Clearaudio version of this takes about 4 hours to do a disc.

..but you own a trouser press?!

Oh yes.

Actually I inherited the thing from an ex into all these home gadgets. On the odd occasions it gets used I usually fling the suit trousers into it after a late night out on the beer after work. I've had creases in some strange places as a result :D

Hi Uncle,

I understand that the Air tight & Clearaudio devices are the same. This device should be a better investment. I wonder is anyone will make an even cheaper version.

The trouser press is an interesting idea.

Two thick sheets of clean plate glass and an oven with reliable and reasonably accurate temperature control do just as good a job as the $1480 device. In other words they flatten a warped record to perfection (so long as you've practiced on a disposable record first).

For much less than $1480.

You don't even need an oven. Two pieces of plate glass and some sunshine is all you need. I have used this method many times.

and the furutech version only works on lp's with dipped run ins, you know with the bulge.

i find my old rega glass platter and acrylic platter with recess do the job perfectly
