Well it was close!
A 20 min train journey took over 2 hours after the severn tunnel was closed. The train infront having apparantly hit an "obstacle" and the tunnel needing to be checked over. Not really sure what they meant by obstacle? Someone been setting up ramps and hurdles?
A quick taxi journey got us there just as the support band (not sure who they were) were finishing. The taxi driver decided to add on for the fact it was a bank hol', the fact there was 6 of us (despite the fact it had "SEATS 6" in big letter on the side), and would have probably gone a couple of laps of Bristol if we hadn't made out like we knew the way
So we all necked a couple of drinks and made our way into the crowd. Not sure if any of you have been to the Bristol Accadey, but it's quite a nice venue. The same thing as when we went to see the Beta Band a little while back though, it was absolutely packed around the entrance to the actual gig area. Then after managing to force our way through to the main area, plenty of room! Are Bristol folk scared of not being close to doors or something?
I'm not very good with song names. They opened with "Bring it on".
When I seen the Beta Band I mentioned how though they were musicaly spot on, and there was some crowd interaction, there didn't seem much of a "show" or atMOsphere. Similarly with Gomez, they're not "heavy" enough for a MOsh pit, they're not Dance enough for....... erm...... a dance. But there was still a fair bit of boppin an a groovin.
They played MOst of the fav's, and the mix between them and the new album stuff (which is what they're obiously touring), was good. And they even broke into a Nick Drake's "Black Eyed Dog" halfway through a tune before returning to it........... which was nice!
They changed a few things rather than doing straight forward album versions. Whipping Piccadily for instance was more *banging*, and other tracks were changed, I guess, to work better live.
It really was a great gig! A MOre lively crowd would perhaps of been nice, but it was by no means dead. It was the last date of their UK tour, and it was great to see a band wo really did seem to be enjoying it! I'd always thought it was just the two singers, the clean quiet voiced one, and the gruff growling one. I didn't realise there was a third one! And what a singer he is too! He made the concert really. They swopped instruments, and I think they all took a turn on the bass at one point. But this guy was excellent!!!
All good singers, and all good musicians! And all seemed genuinely enthusiastic and enjoying it. Perhaps being the last night added to that.
I've not heard the new album, but have heard it's meant to be MOre of a straight "rock" album. And less of the bluesy vibe of previous stuff. The stuff they played seemed a bit MOre basic, but also very good and I'll have to get a copy asap.
I hadn't realised just how good they are as musicans. I like their albums, but live well, they were on another level! It's always good to see if a band can pull it off live. Like with the beta band, these managed it! As soon as "growly voice" sang the first few words of Bring it on, I was smiling. Wow! He can really sing like that!
Very very verrrrrrrrry much enjoyed it! The problems with the journey all forgot.
I think they're playing Glasto, and suggest anyone who's going watches them! They played a decent length set and I'd have been happy to have listened for another couple of hours!
Anyone heard the new album?
Cheers
