Hi Simon,
This is what prompted me to join another HiFi forum, it's a reply from Robert (audiosmile) on PFM forum & I just hadn't heard of audiosmile, so I took a look, liked what I saw & here I am.

Has anyone got any views on the CA 840P & do you really need to spend a fortune on a phono amp to get something decent.

You might be getting confused with the 840P amplifier as the phono stages are the 540P & 640P.
A phono stage needs to have low noise, low distortion, enough headroom for any cartridge and a precise RIAA EQ. The 640P meets that goal and some, and for £100.
A switchable subsonic filter is also quite useful with some arm/cartridge combinations and the 640P has one
The only thing you need think about is choice between silver and black
Be vary careful of stages that sound immediately 'impressive' compared to the crowd. Many don't have accurate RIAA - rising treble is a common trick used to give better apparent detail and clarity.
